Is nail polish safe during pregnancy?

nuni

I paint my nails about once a week. I never get them done at a salon. i usually use OPI products. I do it in a spacious room with an open window and do not inhale more than necessary. I am not sure if the nail polish I use has any bad chemicals like formaldehyde or toluene, and I think my remover is acetone-based. I have been worried lately - Can this really harm the baby, or is it safe in moderation? I am near the end of my first trimester.

Answer
im thinking ur good as long as ur not huffing it. But we do today have a lot of problems they didn't have way back when. nail polish and gas fumes. You know what i mean.l who knows what really affects us. I think ur ok but if you feel convicted of it maybe you should stop. Listen to your inner spirit is much more accurate than humans. I painted my nails regularly and my daughter as soon as she got nails. But i wasn't concerned either.

Yes, nailpolish is harmful when you are pregnant because the chemicals in it can enter your system and therefore harm the baby. Read this article for the details:

Pregnancy and nail polish?

Rock

A friend told me not to use nail polish while pregnant because of the chemicals. If I don't keep my nails polished they chip and break easily. It's bad enough the thought of being bloated and tired all the time...now I have to have nasty nails too??!! I'm asking the pregnant women here... do you polish your nails??

Answer
yes i polished my nails all the time the doc said there was no problem as long as i couldnt smell it real strong i was safe
if you can smell it strong just go outside or open a couple windows

also prenatal vitamins will help alot with your nails by making them stronger shinier and grow faster (same with hair)

are they bad during pregnancy??

i wasn't using them by my stepsister was, i was not in the room, i didn't really think anything of it till now.

should i be concerned that i was in the house while it was done??

25.4 weeks pregnant

Answer
Unless you work in a nail salon, your exposure to the fumes in nail polish and remover is minimal. Not enough of the chemicals in these products are absorbed into the skin to hurt the baby. You can polish your own nails if you want. And if they're anything like mine...stronger than ever and growing like weeds...you should take advantage of it! Good luck and congrats!

Is nail polish safe during pregnancy?

Q. Thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure, it seems that things are a little out of hand these days with the ... don'ts of pregnany. I rarely paint my nails but since being pg I have noticed they have grown and clear polish makes them look decent. Thanks again......

Answer
From the little bit I know, the answer is yes. But don't inhale the fumes!! If you breath them, your baby will breath it too.
Polish remover (acetone), in the other hand is not such an innert chemical:

"Exposure to exogenous acetone can be chronic due to acetone contamination of water, food (e.g. milk), or the air (acetone is volatile). A number of acute poisoning cases have been described. Relatively speaking, acetone is not a very toxic compound; it can, however, damage the mucosa of the mouth and can irritate and damage skin. Accidental intake of large amounts of acetone may lead to unconsciousness and death."

The effects of long-term exposure to acetone are known mostly from animal studies. Kidney, liver, and nerve damage, increased birth defects, and lowered reproduction ability of males (only) occurred in animals exposed long-term. It is not known if these same effects would be exhibited in humans.

Nail polish for pregnant women?

I'm doing my friend's nails for our friend's wedding, but my friend is pregnant, I think about 4 months. She's past the 1st trimester, I know that much. She wants a french mani and obviously can't go to salons because of the fumes and apparantly I can't use Sally Hansen products or Seche Vite topcoat? Any reccomendations for what I should use? I typically use Essie products. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Any nail polish is fine as long as you do it in a well ventalated area. I do think that sally hansen has a stronger smell though. I used essie nail polish my whole pregnancy and was fine. Just open a window when you do it.

Im 10 weeks pregnant and during my job my friend started cleaning a box of nail polish. Some of the nail polish were broken and it smelled a lot. She was actually pretty close when she was doing this. Can this be harmfull to my baby?

Answer
It takes a teeny tiny amount of anything for us to smell it. What you smell goes down either into your lungs along with the air, again this will be a small amount that even makes it this far, or down your throat into your digestive system. Again, this will be very small.
I highly doubt it will do anything to you, let alone your baby. I congratulate you on caring though. If you sat around drinking the stuff, that would be a bad idea. But one sniff is not gonna do anything.
Chill :)

Are pedicures safe when you are in the first trimester?

Jenner

I just found out I am pregnant and am in need of a pedicure. Have there been any warnings regarding nail polish and pregnancy?

Answer
no! And if there was wouldn't you think ther'd be a warning label on the bottle like everything else in the world? I think while you are pregnant it's wonderful to pamper yourself a little! Go for it!
