men wearing nail polish?

Jill

I know this guy that likes to wear nail polish!!! I have known him a very long time he is like my brother to me. I know he is staight male!! Know I have to ask what people out there think about a fetish of his. He came to me a few times and asked me to borrow my nail polish & I let him I didnt see a problem with it I was just wondering if society feels theres a problem with a man wearing nail polish?

Answer
I don't see a problem with this & any color shouldnt matter either as long its not pink poke adotted LOL. I have many seen many men including famous actors & rock stars wearing it.Besides It is a free world to do basically anyting you desire as long as your not hurting anyone or youself. so if he has this fetish so big deal & know one should really care atleast I dont. If it makes him happy then I think people should support him then to down grade him. But then again thats just me.

What color nail polish should a gay man wear ?

Maripos

from your own opinion please.

Answer
I'm a non-gay guy who wears nail polish (mostly just on my toes, though).

I guess it depends on whether or not you're asking about toes or fingers. Walking around with anything more bold than clear (and even that...) on your fingers will put you outside of social norms. So unless he's very comfortable advertising that side of himself, fingers are probably out.

Toes are fun, though. I get a pedi every two weeks and like to try a new color every time. During the winter where I don't show my feet to anyone that doesn't know me, I wear any darn thing I want. During the summer, I wear some variety of sheer or very light pink. I started out with just clear but have been getting more bold over the last 2 years. It's hard to choose, though... because it's hard to find the color that only the people who think it's cute will notice, while everyone else is oblivious :)

If you really want to show off, wear whatever you want and have fun! Guys can like color too! If you want to be more discreet, here are some ideas. I really like Cherry Pop by Essie. It's sheer and a little redder than your standard french manicure type sheer pinks. Mademoiselle by Essie was the first standard sheer pink I tried, it's hardly noticable. Passion by OPI. There is also this really cute "nail blush" stuff by Pinkie Swears. I think you can get it on Sephora. It's very easy to apply, you only need one coat, and it just makes your nails look a little healthy, not at all "polishy". It's obviously a product made for teens, but whatever..

Whew. Have I revealed too much? :)

Nail art design? Help?

@!!iS0n

So I live to paint my nails a lot but I want to make them different looking? Does anyone know how to do designs such as flowers?

Answer
I love doing nail art!! Here are some ideas...

1) Ying-Yang nails. I've currently got this on my nails. You paint your nails white and then does a swirly line down the middle, paint one half black and then do a white dot in the black side and a black dot on the white side.

2) Strawberry nails - sorry, I know this has already been suggested but oh well. Paint your nails red, then do a few blobs of green at the top. Use a cocktail stick dipped in white to do seeds.

3) Flowery - this works especially well on toenails. Paint your nails/toe nails any colour you like. When it dries, dot a bit of white nail varnish in the middle of your nail. Then pick another colour and do lots of little dots around the white dot, like petals. If I do this on my toenails, I only do a flower on my big toe otherwise it gets tricky.

4) Dice nails - Paint your nails white and let that dry. Then, on your little finger, do one dot in black. On your ring finger, do two dots, middle finger do 3 dots, you get the idea, do this until you have 5 dots on your thumb.

Sorry, I'll post more later, but my mum wants the computer.

Opinion on fake nails?

Naomi

I think that they r cute, I wear them all the time. I think that they rnt tacky unless they r really long, I hate that. However I always wear crazy design ones because I would never wear that kind of clothing, it's tacky but I think nails r the perfect place to have crazy designs. What's your opinion? Just curious? Thanks :)

Answer
I have my own nails. I used to do my nails, but I haven't for 12 years. I was going to a Black Tie event, started growing my nails and shaped them, and I was contemplating if I should get French mani or get them done myself, since I've done that for 5 decades. I was reading my fashion magazine, the day I have to leave for Texas, and stopped @ Rite-Aid and bought Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy in the cosmic blue color, it comes with glitter in green. Galactic 210. They come in 10 stellar shades.

EVERYONE who had salon mani paid a fortune on their nails, COMPLIMENTED ME for my @ home 3 dimension finished nails. I did it 1hr. before I went to work that day, and they looked like I spent a fortune on my nails! The price? $8.99

But here's one who want to restore her nails, I just answered her.

So years back when I use to improperly tear off fake nails (the ones you purchase from drug stores w/ the glue in the kit), eventually it left behind these ugly, deep indentation marks on both of my thumb nails. All of my other nails are fine. Polish doesn't look right on my thumbs it almost highlights the indents even more making them look very unappealing. Without having to use buffers or other nail machines...what can I do to restore my nails back to their natural state? NOTE: My thumbs have been this way for years now.

nail artists, please help me about a few things?

MyNameIsJu

im planning on starting my own nail art channel(if successful,im gonna throw in some other material too)but in order to do so,i feel like i need a few requirements before is start? i am quite knowledgeable when it comes to nail art itself,so here are the things im not quite aware about yet,so if you feel like im still lacking some facts that arent in the questions, feel free to inform me:
1. how do i make my nail beds bigger?(the pink part below the white part)
my nail beds are so short and tiny! and small, too. is there any way i can get them bigger? i've done research, and have found that it can indeed be changed. i read somewhere about gel capsules or something like that, please tell me more about it? however,im not exactly wanting to go down the path of medicines,i feel like its kinda risky. so it would be helpful if you give me some other methods. i heard about pushing back cuticles,if you can tell me more about that,or any other method, that would be great. :D
2. tips on better nail care?
how do i keep my nails, nail beds and the like healthy? how do i prevent them from chipping? my nails chip easily as they grow longer, and i really wanna grow them long so my nails i can be more flexible in choices of design to put on them. im aware that there's a product called nail hardener/strengthener. what brands do you recommend? also tell me how much it costs? and other things to keep my nails healthy. i heard putting olive oil is good, especially for the cuticles...and dipping them in certain solutions(e.g.salt+water,olive oil)in different amounts of time can speed up nail growth?further explanation on that please.also, when i accidentally "rip" a part of my nail bed from the nail itself,i get really frustrated for it shortens the nail bed further and the line between the nail bed and nail crooked and is there anyway i can prevent this from happening,or stickinbg back the ripped part back to the nail?
3. how much do certain nail brands cost?
i have had a lot of inspiration watching nail art channels on youtube, such as:
love4nails
cutepolish
meliney
lenysea
cutenails
simplelittlepleasures
ihaveacupcake
pixiepolish
and a WHOLE LOT MORE....if i mention them all,we might rum out of space ,lol :D these channels are all equally my favourites. :D
anyway i noticed that they use quite a variety of brands of nail polish, but these brands seem too always appear in every channel,so im pretty sure they're of good quality:
OPI
orly
sinful colors
la colours
china glaze
essie
sally hansen
zoya
nars
revlon
please tell me how much these brands cost??(they differ) also recommend me some base coats and top coats? thanks.(disclaimer:i do not own these brands,im only asking how much they cost)
sorry for any misspellings.btw,i'd like it even better if you try your best to organize your answer...something like answering them by number, like the questions above. i tried to make my question organized,so sorry if still seems confusing. anyways,if you answer of the same nature like my question,i'd appreciate it. thanks again,my fellow nail artisans! :D

Answer
WOW big question, ill try to answer the best i can ......

I dont know anything about making your nail beds bigger but im pretty sure you cant but you can make your nails look very heathly and strong but it takes time. Use LOTS of cuitcal oil such as solar oil. 3 times a day and really rub it in to the cutical and nail walls. This will premote growth and lessen the chance of hangnails, after a few weeks you will start to see the differnce
Push back cuticals regularly And remove excess skin off the nail plate. Do not clip your cuticles! these are living tissue and you could cause damage! clipping back excess skin can also lead to the skin growing back thicker.

If you rip your nail there is a way of fixing it using fiberglass and resin but thats a whole differnent convo

Okay nail polishes
after you have been creating designs for a while you will know what nail polishes you like, not the same works for all people and all jobs. If you in the UK Essie, sally hansen, revlon and sinful colours are all availible on the highstreet in boots and some larger stores carry Orly. I would look online for a price range and look out for special offers The higher priced ones are usually OPI,China Glaze,Zoya and Orly where as i buy sinful colours for £1 each
I use Lumos Base and top coat but alot of people use Seche Vite and ill be trying seche vite soon I have an artical on my blog about Lumos at www.lifeinlacquer.blogspot.co.uk

I would also invest in some nail art brushes, scotch tape and good nail polish remover.

If your concerned about price i would think alot about starting a blog or channel as it can cost a bit to start up and keep in mind all the other bits and bobs youll need such as cotton wool etc.

Please check out my work at lifeinlacquer.blogspot.co.uk for more ideas about polishes and i buy a fair few from fragrancedirect.co.uk

What are popular nail polish colors for teens? Please give me your prreferences and ages.?

Joyce A

I hope to hear from young girls and teens, or their moms for this question. Do teens like the traditional reds and pinks, or do you prefer shades like greens and blues? Do you like polish for your toenails, too? I'm putting together a gift basket, and I need your input. Thanks in advance.

Answer
I'm 14 and I love using the make yourself a french manicure kit things...they're about $4, but they come with a lot of strips that you use to make a perfect manicure...I also love using Hot pink. For toe nails, I use hot pink mostly...i don't use much red. For younger kids, i remember I used blue almost all the time...that and very light pink. Also, there are little decals you can buy to put on your nails like flowers and stars...etc...
hope i helped ya!
ciao for now,

how can i stop biting my nails ?

Q. I have tried the nail polish stuff and it is not working so how can i stop ?

Answer
I bit till my fingers bled, as a kid my folks used bad tasting polish to stop me, but I'd either wash it off or bite anyway, I also tried fake nails but they'd come off and look messy so make me bite my fingers more - plus they are really bad for your nails!

What worked for me was making a point one day to care for them - soaked in warm milk with lemon (lemon softens cuticals and whitens nails), conditioning wax treatment, hand cream, cutical treatment, and nail growth polish. As I'd made the effort I didn't want to spoil it so stopped biting. I'm not saying be a girly-girl spending hours on nails daily, just a little time occasionally. I recommend Sally Hansen's maximum nail growth polish, normal polish can look bad on bitten nails but this (or nail treatments/base coats) looks natural, it also helps nail growth - don't use long term! Ingredients in most nail polishes are actually really bad for your nails, so if you want long nails don't use nail polish daily in the long-term. Or mix olive oil (1tbsp) and talc or clay (1/2 tbsp) as a natural polish that will also promote circulation. When I'd get raggid edges I'd bite more, so get a nail kit with buffing boards and files to repair damage, try crystal files to prevent more damage, they're also pretty.

It sounds obvious but the trick is to get nails to grow before biting them, once grown you really don't tend to bite, it feels different so it breaks the habit. So a few tips to help growth nice strong nails; don't use nails as tools, keep nails clean during gardening by scraping a bar of soap so it's soap under nails rather than dirt, keep all nails the same length with rounded edges, never cut cuticals as they protect nails instead push them back whenever you wash your hands, use light vegetable oil on nails before buffing up to promote circulation, check out nail care recipies online as they're very cheap to make and an easy way to improve your nails. You can buy nail-growth vitamins but they cost an absolute fortune, like normal vitamins you don't get anything you'd not get with a good diet so don't waste your money. Look at improving overall diet for better nails, but particularly look at foods that are a source of vitamin d to help absorb calcium to strengthen nails (cereals, eggs, milk, herrings), to support keratin development you need source of the b-vitamin biotin (eggs, cod, salmon, lean beef), and to hydrate nails go for foods that provide omeda-3 fatty acids (flax seeds, pulses, wholemeal foods).

Where to find fimo fruits and/or nail art gems?

Christy Br

Please also give places: (e.g. Walgreens, Wall-Mart, CVS, McDonald's)

Answer
Lol at McDonalds.

Apart from ordering online, the easiest way to get 'em is just to go to Sally's Beauty. They always have them in the stores, even the stores that don't get new collections. You can find them along the same wall that has all of the nail polish, it's on either the very right or very left depending on the store. Between polish displays you'll find some in individual packs, maybe some in wheels, and if you go further back along the wall near the acrylics, you'll find wheels that have a bunch of them.

http://www.sallybeauty.com/nail-decorations/SELECT,default,pd.html?cgid=Nail07
Those are the wheels I'm referring to (they do have all fruit ones even though this is a flower one). Again, there are other ones in individual packages (meaning all apples, all oranges, all watermelon, all rhinestones, etc.)

If you're interested in cutting your own fimo, check out amazon sellers like Bundle Monster for TONS of fimo canes. They have 100 canes for $10 and 50 canes for under $5.

Answer
The sally hansen nail art pens never last very long. I have one in a light pink and i did designs on my sister's nails. It came off the next day. You can make your own dotting tool out of simple things. Dotting tools are pretty easy to use for designs.

Can Cancer Patients wear Nail Polish?

allie_go_g

I enjoy doing nail art and I would like to go to the Children's hospital to do some cute nail art on the kids in the cancer wing, I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't hurt them in any way and it would be all right.

Answer
It has to be a new nail polish bottle that hasn't been used. And they can only use it once. So get the ones from Claires that come in that pack of like 5 or something and are small. And you have to make sure everything you use is sanitized and that you don't cut them because their counts might be low and a cut would be bad!
My Aunt did that for me this past year because I couldn't get them done at a nail place. How nice of you to do that for them!

What can I do with pink & purple nail polish...?
So i have pink & shiny purple NYC nailpolish & tmr is the first day of school what can I do with those 2 colors??? please hel pme? I wanna learn to do a DIY nail art type of thing do u have nay ideas or pics or vids? please

Answer
POLKA DOTS OR STRIPES: use the lighter color as your base and then dip a tooth pick into the second color to add the design.

ONE OUT: paint all but your ring fingers in one color, and your ring fingers in the other color.

COLORED FRENCH MANI: use the lighter color as your base again and then use the darker one on only the tips of your nails.

CUT OUTS: this one's long hard to explain, but you do the same lighter base as the others and then when they're dry, cut tape triangles (about four per nail, think like skinny isosceles triangle) and lay them so that they start with the larger end on the outside of your nail and the skinny angles in the middle, alternating so that they're kind of life zebra stripes
(> )
( <) but the triangles should go farther in. Then paint with the darker color on top and it should look
(> ) like a cut out dress kind of thing.

Just a few ideas. You might want to check out seventeen.com, they usually have pretty good ideas.

where can i find special art designs for nails in NYC?

teens 3 questions about nails,1. whats the best nail polish that helps with breakage and helps it grow?

KaSeY rOsE

2.i have anemia * low iron* and my nails break off does that mean my iron levels are low?
3. tips on keeping my nails even after i get a breakage?

Answer
Well for me I have quite strong nails and kind of long ones and haven't had this problem so I'm not entirely sure, but I think you deserve at least some advice. Well depending on the stores around you there would be all different types of nail polish so I can't give you an exact nail polish to help. You can always try different ones and feel free to ask family members or friends about this, even ask staff members at the shops for suggestions. You can always use clear strong nail polish (cant think of the right thing at the moment) that might help prevent chipping and breakage. I personally hardly ever paint my fingernails a colour, normally it's just clear to help stop chipping. But if you like having a colour on put clear ontop. If the nail polish you buy is extremely thin maybe try two coats. I'm not sure about the iron since I haven't had any experience with this but I searched on google images 'clear strong nail polish' I'm not sure where they sell it but one that had a few pics of was Mabelline New York Forever Strong Professional (also says in a box '+iron') so this may help. Possibly ask someone you know about this and see if its any good?

Some tips for that from me would be:
1. If the breakage is say a small area and didn't actually break of like its split open from the side, try to cut down to that area if it isn't to low to prevent it from tearing and ripping deeper.
2. If you can try to wear clear nail polish most of the time to try stop breakage.
3. Shorter nails may help prevent breakage when doing normal everyday activities. Example: when I was younger my mother would always keep her nails cut short since they would just break off when she was doing her job. On holidays shed grow them out then cut them back down after.
4. Try to keep up your iron levels as high as you can with anemia, this could help.
5. Keep your nails in a good shape, don't have them to long and be sure to file them to round the edges etc.

I really hope something from this helps :) and wish you the best of luck towards the future. I'm not sure I was much help but thought that you deserved an answer after waiting so long :)

nail polish question?

sweetie

is clear nail polish the same as a top coat?
does it matter which one i use?

Answer
Yes, clear nail polish is the same thing as a top coat - usually, but not always. It depends on how in depth you want to look at it.

Let me explain:

There are three main nail polish formulas:

1. Base - Used to "prime" the nail, fill in ridges, grab onto nail color, etc. It's usually clear, but it can come in a variety of colors.

2. Nail Polish - This is what you think of when you think of painting your nails. A good nail polish is all in the preference, but I prefer one that is non-streaky, has a nice wide brush, and is not too thick. Clear nail polish CAN go into this category. It can be the second step OR the third step.

3. Top Coat - Usually applied to keep nails shiny and to help guard against chipping. Can also be applied to strengthen the nail itself. Lots of topcoats actually have vitamins in them.

If you use a clear nail polish as a topcoat, you should apply it twice. The double layer is necessary to keep your nails looking nice, shiny, and unchipped. If you apply nail polish correctly, it'll take 5-10 minutes longer than you're used to, but it should last for a couple weeks without having to redo it. It's definitely worth doing right.

Good luck and Merry Christmas! :)

If you pour nail polish remover or vinegar and salt into a cut will it get infected?

m.k.

Answer
Nail Polish Remover well it just gets nail polish off
Vinegar solves a lot of problems, Ear Aches, Infections, etc..
Salt well it is used welll anywheres, On food, even in water, It helps the water get soft, etc...

But no it wont infect the cut

Will adding vinegar to old nail polish?

Athena

make it more liquidy and usable again?

Answer
I'm going to say don't do it. Vinegar is not an ingredient in nail polish so I have no idea what the outcome would be. You need to buy nail polish THINNER. It's an amazing product, it's cheap, and it restores your polish wonderfully. This is the kind I use:
http://www.sallybeauty.com/Nail-Polish-Thinner/SBS-163400,default,pd.html

It's super cheap and totally worth it. I have never used a full bottle, and have been able to extend the life of my thick top coats and old polish until they were all the way to the bottom.

But please do not EVER EVER EVER use nail polish remover in your polish. Acetone or not. If you do this, it can entire ruin your polish as demonstrated here:
http://lacquerlaine.blogspot.com/2009/12/laines-favorite-blue-nail-polish-and.html
I mean think about it. You use remover to REMOVE your polish. Why the heck would you put a remover INTO a bottle of polish. That's a horrible idea.
And don't use water, either. There's no water in your nail polish so it would just totally screw up the consistency.

Here's what the wonders of thinner can do:

What are the best brands and colors of nail polish to use for water marbling?

Sara

I've tried water marbling a few times and have never been successful. The nail polishes I've tried are Sally Hanson Xtreme Wear, N.Y.C, and a few different Avon Colors. I use Sally Hanson Diamond Strength Base Coat, and Revlon No-Chip Top Coat. Every time I go to design the pattern in the water, the polish sticks to the Tooth Pick, and then I have to start, and I'm wasting SO MUCH nail polish! Any tips? Thanks!

Answer
Oooh I've done this. In fact, I am about to do some marble art now for college tomorrow lol. I'm really not usually into nail art and can never normally do stuff like this successfully, but for some reason, marble art has come easy to me. . . I'm braggin, I know, but this is a huge achievement for me =P

Believe it or not but I use really cheap nail varnish and it works. I use George (Asda's brand or Walmart if you're in America) nail polish and it works a treat. I also use Rimmel.

Your problem may not actually be with your nail polish though. It may be that your taking too long to do the swirls. When I do it, the polish usually hardens almost straight away. The trick is to be quick and not let it set. And when you swirl it, don;t start right from the outer colour. Kinda start in the middle out. If that makes sense. Also, I use a straightened hair grip to swirl mine.

Hope this helps and all the best!

Different ways to apply nail polish?

Caroline

What are some ways that you can get different effects with your nail polish, like water marbling?

Answer
I like newspaper nails!
How to..

Paint your nails white/light grey (Put a base coat if you want to)
Dip your nail in rubbing alcohol for 5 seconds
Firmly press newspaper on your nail for 10 seconds. (Only print words work, I've tried pictures and it didn't work.)
Take off newspaper. The words will be on your nail and put a clear coat on top of it so it stays.

Cassie

I would like to learn how to start doing cooler things with my nail polish. I don't have a ton of money to spend on it, but how would you suggest getting started? What tools would I need? If I wanted to do acrylic nails at home, what products do you recommend?

Answer
If you haven't already, get down to Dollar General and grab some of their nail polish in the skinny bottles. It's cheap and it has the skinny brush, which is what you'll want to use for designs. Now, if you go on with this and start wanting to buy better quality stuff, great. But for now, I'd start with the inexpensive brands. If you have a steady hand, try some more complex stuff (cheetah print, letters, rainbows, etc). If you have a hard time keeping your hand from shaking, start off with simple French tips and the like. Get on Pinterest, too. There are a lot of cool ideas you can replicate or make your own. If you want to start acrylics, I'd buy a cheap kit first at the drugstore, and give it a couple shots with that before you buy quality stuff. Who wants to practice paint jobs on an expensive car?!

daisy

http://www.yescomusa.com/product.php?productid=1231&cat=147&page=1

i would like to buy this system but dont know if you can use it for nail art and that was one of the reasons i wanted to buy it.
yeah im not getting it for professional use... just for fun!!

Answer
A real air brush & compressor would cost a LOT more money so I doubt this thing will be up to the job but for $60 it might be a fun way to start learning how to use an air brush. If you need a real one the cheapest way is to buy it secondhand on Ebay.

Whats The Story With Great Nails??

Yvonne Mys

I have soft nails coz of my calcium deficience (for which I'm taking suppliments by the way). I see a lot of women with beautiful nails and great art on them. Are they all acrylics? Doesn't it take time to do? Where can I find stencils and other 'equipment' for nail art? Acrylics are hard to maintain? How do you take off nails that you've glued onto your own? So many questions... Help me out!

I've always been a tom-boy and this is relatively new to me!

Answer
There are different things you can do with your nails. You can eather get gel or acrylic or you can just get them painted. If you decide to get acrylic or gel it will be difficult to take off the nail, I used this site and the technique on there and they came off so easily!!! http://allaboutnailtips.blogspot.com/

I am a nail bitter, how do I stop? Please help!!!!?

Cam

I have a huge bad habit that I bite my nails. They r bitten till the bleed :( I have tried to stop but I just can't :( how do I stop? And what r some tips to get my nails to grow faster and longer? Thx! And I have already tried nail polish (witch looks really bad on my nails for them being so short), a mixture that made them taste bad, a squishy ball to squish when I want to bite, ect. I need the big guns! Nothing that costs that much money though please! Thanks!!!

Answer
I was a nail biter for 25 years, but you need to find some kind of therapy because that is considered OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. When you dropped one problem, you end up with a new problem.

Number one: keep your fingers occupied. Take up a new hobby, also try chewing gum - sugarfree pref.
(Another reason why I love to type, & a TC on YA!)

Second: try to make your fingers look nice, let them grow. That way you'll have a good reason NOT to bite them.

Growing nails comes from: your good genes, good nail care, and all the healthy foods you eat everyday from Mother Nature.
Beauty products don't make nails grow. Eating does. Babies can do that just by drinking their milk. People giving advice on YA! should list their sources.

You really are what you eat. If you're eating all the healthy foods from Mother Nature - not made by man or woman or supplements from GNC, your hair, nails, teeth, and the rest of your body will benefit too. You get all your vitamins & minerals from your diet. Your hair's fine. You're health's fine, so are your nails. Made-by man vitamins can do more harm than good. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesnât have to approve supplements â no agency in the United States does. Because of inadequate quality control and inspection, supplements contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs have been sold to unsuspecting consumers. And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality donât apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.
Beginning in February 2008, they experienced one symptom after another: diarrhea, joint pain, HAIR LOSS, lung problems, and fingernails and toenails that fell off. FDA has received numerous reports of harm associated with the use of these products, including stroke, liver injury, kidney failure, heart palpitations, and death. 3-15-11
Do NOT TAKE SUPPLEMENTS without your doctor's OK.

My Hubby, my SIL and their mom ALL have the same nails and break easily and hubby and I have eaten the same foods for over 39 years. Then it's from your genes.

Get a manicure to a good salon, or do them yourself. You can protect them by using one of those plastic gloves. I use gloves often: for chores, gardening, handling papers, going outside during winter, spring & fall, and kitchen, painting, crafting, etc. That way I don't have to wash my hands often.

Did Jesus Really Die on a Cross?

Sbaptiste

âTHE cross,â says one encyclopedia, âis the most familiar symbol of Christianity.â Many religious paintings and works of art depict Jesus nailed to a cross. Why is this symbol so widespread in Christendom? Did Jesus really die on a cross?
Many would point to the Bible for the answer. For example, according to the King James Version, at the time of Jesusâ execution, onlookers made fun of Jesus and challenged him to âcome down from the cross.â (Matthew 27:40, 42) Many other Bible translations read similarly. Todayâs English Version says of Simon from Cyrene: âThe soldiers forced him to carry Jesusâ cross.â (Mark 15:21) In these verses, the word âcrossâ is translated from the Greek word staurosâ². Is there a solid basis for such a translation? What is the meaning of that original word?
Was It a Cross?
According to Greek scholar W. E. Vine, staurosâ² âdenotes, primarily, an upright pale or stake. On such malefactors were nailed for execution. Both the noun and the verb stauroÅ, to fasten to a stake or pale, are originally to be distinguished from the ecclesiastical form of a two beamed cross.â
The Imperial Bible-Dictionary says that the word staurosâ² âproperly signified a stake, an upright pole, or piece of paling, on which anything might be hung, or which might be used in impaling a piece of ground.â The dictionary continues: âEven amongst the Romans the crux (Latin, from which our cross is derived) appears to have been originally an upright pole.â Thus, it is not surprising that The Catholic Encyclopedia states: âCertain it is, at any rate, that the cross originally consisted of a simple vertical pole, sharpened at its upper end.â
There is another Greek word, xyâ²lon, that Bible writers used to describe the instrument of Jesusâ execution. A Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament defines xyâ²lon as âa piece of timber, a wooden stake.â It goes on to say that like staurosâ², xyâ²lon âwas simply an upright pale or stake to which the Romans nailed those who were thus said to be crucified.â
In line with this, we note that the King James Version reads at Acts 5:30: âThe God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree [xyâ²lon].â Other versions, though rendering staurosâ² as âcross,â also translate xyâ²lon as âtree.â At Acts 13:29, The Jerusalem Bible says of Jesus: âWhen they had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from the tree [xyâ²lon] and buried him.â
In view of the basic meaning of the Greek words staurosâ² and xyâ²lon, the Critical Lexicon and Concordance, quoted above, observes: âBoth words disagree with the modern idea of a cross, with which we have become familiarised by pictures.â In other words, what the Gospel writers described using the word staurosâ² was nothing like what people today call a cross. Appropriately, therefore, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures uses the expression âtorture stakeâ at Matthew 27:40-42 and in other places where the word staurosâ² appears. Similarly, the Complete Jewish Bible uses the expression âexecution stake

Answer
This is the full quote from the Imperial Bible-Dictionary:

"The Greek word for cross, [stauros], properly signified a stake, an upright pole, or piece of paling, on which anything might be hung, or which might be used in impaling [fencing in] a piece of ground. But a modification was introduced as the dominion and usages of Rome extended themselves through Greek-speaking countries. Even amongst the Romans the crux (from which our cross is derived) appears to have been originally an upright pole, and this always remained the more prominent part. But from the time that it began to be recognized as an instrument of punishment, a transverse piece of wood was commonly added; not, however, always even then. For it would seem that there were more kinds of death than one by the cross: this being sometimes accomplished by transfixing the criminal with a pole, which was run through his back and spine, and came out at his mouth...In another place (Consol ad Marciam, xx.), Seneca mentions three different forms: 'I see,' says he, 'three crosses, not indeed of one sort, but fashioned in different ways: one sort suspending by the head persons bent toward the earth, others transfixing them through their secret parts, others extending their arms on a patibulum.' There can be no doubt, however, that the latter sort was the more common, and that about the period of the gospel age crucifixion was usually accomplished by suspending the criminal on a cross piece of wood."

The dictionary goes on to describe three different cross shapes (including "T" and "X"), and then the entry continues, "But the commonest form, it is understood, was that in which the upright piece of wood was crossed by another near the top, but not precisely at it...It was on a cross of this form, according to the general voice of tradition, that our Lord suffered; but there is nothing in the narratives of the evangelists which determines this to have been the form employed, rather than either of the other two. It is, however, the one most commonly met with in the paintings and sculptures that have survived from the earlier ages." (p377)

While it is clear that the Greek word stauros originally meant âstake,â a word means more than its simple etymology, as the English word "nice" demonstrates, which originally meant âignorantâ or âfoolish.â So to understand the biblical stauros, we must look at the historical as well as the linguistic context. Under whose judicial system, using whose methods of execution, did Jesus die? The Romans, of course. So Greek methods of execution are irrelevant â the issue is how Romans did it.

It is very likely that Greeks never used a cross-bar, but impaled people on a sharpened stake as the Phonecians did. Eventually, the Greeks at Carthage began to also hang people on an upright stake. The victims would suffocate very quickly. In fact, it was conclusively proven by medical researchers Frederick T. Zugibe and Hermann Moedder that a person hung by his arms overhead would suffocate in a manner of about 6 minutes, due to the inability of the lungs to expand and contract in such a position. Since Luke 23:44 and Matthew 27:45-46 show that Christ was on the cross for about three hours, the evidence points to His death on a traditional cross.

A question about my nail stamper?

Sweety

i just bought a new nail stamp which was extremely cheap (i don't know about it's quality) and i do know how to use a nail stamp but this one just doesn't want to work. i app;y the nail polish on the design then scrape... when i scrape all the nail polish is gone and the design has nothing on it and doesn't stamp any thing. so what do you think i did wrong?
how can i let the nailpolish stay on the design but the excess is only scraped off? any ideas?
thanks :(

Answer
I love nail stamping! There are so many awesome designs and you can let your creative side loose. Some plates work really well (konad, monster) and others not so much (shany)

If the plate isn't deep enough it wont hold the polish and it wont transfer to your stamper. If the image wont stick to the stamper take an emery board and rough up the surface of the stamper. This gives the polish something to stick to. Scrape on an angle and you might try using an old gift card or rewards card to see if that will make a difference.

Good Luck!

How should I do my nails?

Alex'S

???

Answer
Have a look at this website:
http://pinterest.com/cutecs/nails-so-many-cute-ways/

They have lots of cute ways to do nails. If you don't know how to do these things, visit Cutepolish on youtube; http://www.youtube.com/user/cutepolish?feature=watch

Personally, my favourite ways to do nails are these:
The newspaper nails (this is really cool, using newspaper to print a pattern on your nails!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kcdt4_5Ncc

Moustache nails (I love moustaches!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wc66W0lYx0

And the converse nails (these look really good, and are very effective)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oJ7ez_5FMc

So yeah, just have a look at that youtube channel, I'm sure you'll find something. Also, vintage nails are quite nice, with little floral patterns on them. If you're not very talented at nail art, the newspaper nails are really easy, or just paint your fingernails a nice colour, then maybe use some crackle nail polish to make it look like a zebra pattern (you can buy this from claire's) or add a little jewel or glitter.
