what is nail polish primer and does it make polish last longer?

Kat

I'm looking for something to make my nail polish last longer before it chips. I get pretty good brands but they still chip so that I have to do it over by about the 5th day. Is that what primer does? If not, any other ideas for keeping nail polish from chipping?

Answer
To be honest 5-6 days is about the average life of nail polish. Although, a good base coat and top coat can extend it! I highly recommend Orly's Rubberized Base Coat (this just provides more flexibility under the polish, and it doesn't chip top coat) or Creative Nails Sticky Base Coat is good as well! As for a top coat I recommend Creative Nail Shiny Top Coat! All of these can be found at Sally's Beauty Supply! The base coat goes on before the polish and the top coat goes on after your done polishing!

Happy nail painting!

Does Sally Beauty Supply have reasonable prices on Nail Polish?

...

Also, is Revlon a good brand? I know OPI is supposed to be the best, but I have a hard time spending $8/per bottle.

Answer
revlon is ok. where you want to spend the money is on a good topcoat. thats what prevents chipping. i go to sallys and i love it. orly makes a great polish, comparable to opi. fingerpaints are good too. sallys sometimes has sales, look for coupons in the store flyers as well.

Fundraising for a People to People trip?

Alyssa Smi

People to People is an organization that brings middle school and high school students all over the world. I'm dying to go to South Africa with them during summer 2014, but my parents unfortunately aren't thrilled about paying $7000 for me to go. I've decided to start fundraising with my friend... does anyone have any tips? Thanks!

Answer
Just the basic math you are looking at $200 a week. To much from a part time job. You will need to decide how important this is to you and give up some of your requests for STUFF. Cash gifts for your Birthday or Christmas. Doing work for your neighbors . Dog walking, baby sitting (means use miss the party or school dance). Yard work like cutting grass shovelling snow. Have an elderly neighbor some help with their grocery shopping carrying the heavy bags. Raking the leaves in the yard. Putting up Christmas lights.

It is a lot of money be fair and ask your parents how much they can afford and see how much you have to come up with you may have to wait a year to do it. Can you do without new cell phone or latest CD What expenses do you have you can cut back on to contribute to the pot. That new dress or the Latest make up. Every little bit helps.

Even if your parents can pay half you are looking at $100 a week.A challenge things like taking a lunch to school with a drink and not buying it everyday can add up fast. A few missed trips to the mall to just spend money on STUFF you can wait for.

Not knowing your family situation a NICE and not begging request for help from say Grandparents
it could mean no presents for a year or two.

It is not just MAKING some money but cutting what you spend everyday on sodas and candy. A burger or a milkshake after school. A new jacket or scarf. The container of nail polish and so on.

Good Luck it is a grand adventure but very expensive.

What makes the Scream so famous?

Joel

I mean it's just a somewhat creepy painting of a guy screaming, while holding his head. Please explain.

Answer
Have you read this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scream

There is a link in the article to another on the Expressionist art movement, which is relevant, since this was back in the days when people were a whole lot more repressed than they are now.

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding its source of fame; its creepy. It kinda nibbles on your fears, haunts you. Compared to some of the nightmare art of today, its extremely mild, but it was rad stuff in its day.

Its also famous for how its been used and abused in pop culture. Way back in the day, I had a t-shirt that showed The Scream with a subtitle "President Quayle".

Which of these names would work best for my band (Alternative Rock)?

Austin Gre

Here's a little background information you'll need to know to help us figure out which name works best for us... We're a Dark Cabaret/Alternative Rock band. We have four members in the band itself; one guitarist, one bassist, one drummer, me (the lead singer and all around freak), and we use some program - I don't remember what it's called - to play synthesizer and electric keyboard for certain songs. All four of us (three guys, one girl) can sing. We also have two people who help us out with makeup, stage props, my costume changes, and also come out to play characters throughout the show. Each member of the band also has their own distinct character we play on stage. Our style of music draws from diverse influences such as Grunge, Glam Rock, Gothic Rock, Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock, Garage Rock, Shoegaze, Electro Rock, and Acid Rock. The bands we draw most of our influences come from: The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Janeâs Addiction, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, The Cure, Voltaire, Emilie Autumn, The Cruxshadows, Bella Morte, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Dead Kennedys, Oingo Boingo, Iggy & The Stooges, My Bloody Valentine, Jakalope, and Garbage. We have a few other minor influences as well, but Iâm going to get into them. I know that many of those bands I listed have pretty diverse sounds, but we like to do that in our band. For instance, one song could be a catchy, pop rock anthem with a hard edge and the next song will be fast-paced, pummeling alternative metal song. We donât like being confined to one genre. I actually canât stand certain bands who basically just recreate the same song over and over again. Our lyrics make references to Thelema, LaVeyan Satanism, Nihilism, folklore, religions, mythology, drugs, sex, violence, politic groups and movements, events/people/groups throughout history, and the media.

With all that in mind... Here are the two names we've narrowed it down to and their meanings:

-Modern World
⦠Many of our lyrics and performance center around themes that are generally universal and can be applied to different parts of history, our society as it is today, and (possibly) the future as well. So we sort of critique the world as we see it.

-The Mechanical Brides
⦠I first heard the term âmechanical brideâ in the Manson song, âMechanical Animals.â The song is about not being a mindless sheep, whereas a âmechanical brideâ is basically someone who is metaphorically married to the idea of conformity in an industrialized society (not saying weâre one of those douche âanti-conformistsâ). That meaning of âmechanical brideâ is the theme of the Melvins song âThe Mechanical Bride,â which is based off a philosophy book, by Marshall McLuhan, that is a critique/satire of popular culture and society, called âThe Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man.â The title of the book itself comes from an expressionist painting from the Dada era, which was a cultural movement mainly centered around experimental art and poetry that made political and social statements. With all four of those things in mind, I feel that The Mechanical Brides expresses what we do in a sarcastic way.

And if you don't think any of these work... Please give me your best suggestion.

Answer
I would say the Mechanical Brides, it seems to fit better.

Can OPI Nail Envy be mixed with Loreal Polish?

Liz

I have a bottle of OPI Nail Envy that's about to run out. I was just wondering if I could mix it with another polish (I have a brand new Loreal Sweet Nothing's) since its a little pricey. I will replace it soon, but times are hard. :-/ Thanks

Answer
No. OPI nail Envy is not a nail polish, it is a supplement for the nails that is painted on. If you were to mi it with a nail polish, it would most likely not give the nails what it previously had, meaning that it wouldn't be worth it. Save up and get some later. Your nails won't be harmed if you stop using it for a while.

what is the best type of nail polish to buy?

Q.

Answer
i adore nail polish i have... over thirty bottles! it really depends what you want..

NYC: the nyc brand has the most unique colors, like vibrant greens and shimmery blues, pretty much every color they have! the only down to this brand is that usually its kind of difficult because the polish is so thin you have to put on a couple coats to get the desired color.

Cover Girl: Cover girl is really interesting, they have awesome colors too, like i have a deep red from them and a bright orange but i dont really like this brand either because they are thin too, but i would say CG is worse because the color doesnt go on evenly and after doing a couple coats it wont dry any longer.

O.P.I. : i dont know too much about OPI, i only have their strengtheners and top coats, but from my knowledge, they are thick and long lasting, and from many acquaintences ive heard they are the best, and many manicure stylists use it. The colors are limited from what i can find in drug stores, but they have some cool ones, like one is a light yellowy green i almost bought. also, very expensive, i think around ten bucks a bottle.

Sally Hansen: Sally is the big brand for nail polish, amazing lenghteners and strengtheners, and a variety of shiny and original colors, the only thing is that most of the colors ive seen in countless stores from sally hansen range in the reds, pinks, and purples, not much more than that for color coats though their manicure kits and strengtheners rock. but my only real complaint is the "ten day no chip" polish actually doesnt stay on too long, apply a clear coat over your job every day or two with Sally.

Loreal: i only have a couple loreal, and they are all loreal paris, and they seem kinda thin, not to mention that the brush is really wide and gives a messy job... not much more to say, but the colors are... unique.

hard candy: hard candy is a smaller brand, from urban decay makeup (which i love!) hard candy has the most modern, sparkly dazzling colors ive seen, a silvery black, an angelic tan-ish silver, i love them! they are pretty cheap, but are a little thin, and usually need a coat or too.

Essie: I have a couple essie polishes, the colors are gorgeous yet again, but i also find that like CG its a bit runny and uneven when you put it on.

Chanel: it was totally in, the black chanel polish, but i have no experience with it for its high demand, and i dont really care for black polish too much, but if you like designer, even though no one can tell, splurge!

these are the only brands i have/ know of that i can help with,
hope i could help!

Where can I get 99 cent nail polish?

LollyPop71

I want some green nail polish for St. Patrick`s Day. But I want to get 99 cent kind. Does CVS pharmacy sell them? Thanks for all your help!

Answer
Do you know the NYC brand of make up? Well they have some 99 cent nail polish! You can buy them at like Target, Wal-mart and CVS.

Essie nail polish or OPI? Why?

<3

Answer
I want to start by saying that each nail polish is different. Not brand, but polish. Some of my favorite polishes are cheap polishes, one that comes to mind in particular is Essence Choose Me! It's 99 cents and beautiful. You can find great quality nail polishes cheap as well. Sally Hansen is phenomenal for drug store polishes. Those who buy only "salon polish" are truly missing out, and I feel sorry that they think that because it's more expensive that it's better quality. Nail polish is it's own creature and expensive certainly does not mean better. I'm saying this with the experience of having tried everything from cheap essence polishes to Chanel. Most of my collection consists of Orly polishes because I have found I consistently love their formula, color, and finish selection, also because they're easily available. And their price is fine for me - $5-$7.

Choose polish based on the individual polish, not the brand. If it's a color and finish that you just love, buy it! If it's a regular pink or red creme, you can buy those in any brand and I suggest a cheaper brand purely because those colors are so common.

Specifically with Essie, they do a LOT of sheer colors and neutral colors. That's their thing. If you like that, then go for it! I haven't had any major problems with their formula being particularly streaky or anything. But seriously, watch out for sheers. If it looks like a pretty pastel pink in the bottle, it may show up as next to nothing on the nail. This doesn't mean the quality is bad, it's just what Essie intended. And I would still choose Essie over OPI.

No, you do not get more polish with OPI. Essie and OPI are the exact same size, both 15mL. I have found that OPI seems to have consistantly poor polish quality. I'm not a fan of their formula at all. Despite chipping which I will explain later, they are known for getting goopy faster than other polish and become very difficult to open. I find the formula is not good to work with overall. There are some that I love, don't get me wrong. All Rose Lead To Rome is gorgeous. But they have some hot mess polishes - Gargantuan Green Grape, Banana Bandana, Italian Love Affair, etc. I also find that their brush is way too large for any sort of precision. It's larger than my pinkie nail, and doesn't allow for nice, even strokes on the rest of my nails. Their color selection is standard in comparison to other brands in their range (Orly, China Glaze, Zoya), and I find the other three I listed to have better color and finish selections.

Before you buy polish, you can always use google and search "*polish brand* *color name* swatch". So an example would be "Essie Mint Candy Apple Swatch". There are many, many nail polish bloggers that will show you swatches of the color on nails, and tell you about the formula. You can also use sites like nailgal.com that are filled with swatches of different polishes and you can look for a specific polish in their search.

If you're concerned about chipping and wear, many people don't realize the significance and importance of a good top and base coat. I don't know if you're using a base and top coat, but if you're not, you need to. You need a combination of both, and you can make almost any nail polish last for a week+. They also certainly help prevent yellowing or staining to the nails. Here are some of the best top and base coats on the market:

Top Coats:
Seche Vite
Poshe
Sally Hansen Insta-Dri

Base Coats:
CND Stickey
Barielle (there are several different ones)
Gelous
Orly Bonder
I personally use Sally Hansen Double Duty Top and Base Coat (ONLY as a base coat) and I love it.

Top and Base Coat set:
Zoya's Color Lock System is becoming VERY popular, and a lot of other nail fanatics are swearing by it.

The other thing is WRAP YOUR TIPS!! Wrapping will REALLY help prevent chipping. Wrap every layer you use from base to top. Wrapping is simply when you make sure the polish goes over the tip of your nail and just around to the underside. So when you look at your nail straight on at the tip, you don't see the white of your nail.

Getting nails done at a salon?

Batool

I've never gotten my nails done before and I'm thinking about trying it. I do not want to do anything that involves fake nails. So, I was wondering is it possible to get nail art done ( like with those cute designs and little gems) on natural nails? Also, is it possible to remove the design whenever I want if I get nail art done on natural nails? Lastly, what are the steps in general when getting your nails done? Thanks in advance. :)

Answer
Of course you can i got my nails done with a cute little flower or sometime gems.
The steps are:
1) you pick out a color and design
2) they sit I down and start cutting and filing your nails also they push down the cuticle
3) then they cut some skin off from the sides
4) then they put one hand in a bowl of water and start doing the same in the other nails
5) and once all that jazz is done they dry your hands and put a base coat on
6) then they put the color ðððððð
7) then they wait till it dries and start doing the design

What is the best nail strengthening polish?

Lindsay

I am anemic and have very brittle nails. They peel and break at every available opportunity. I have used Sally Hansen Double Duty strengthening Base & Top Coat, Sally Hansen Miracle Cure For Severe Problem Nails, Sally Hansen Teflon Tuff Extra Strength Nail Protector, and Nutra Nail Strengthener With Green Tea Antioxidants. None of these have worked. I always apply two base coats at least once a week. Every few weeks I will even apply one coat once a day for a week. I've tried two coats, then two days later I remove everything and apply another two coats and do that process for a week. I just can't keep my nails from breaking or peeling.
I've seen other people post looking for the same solution, but some people don't list a specific product. I've been on Sally Hansen's website and it seems that they have SO MANY different nail strengtheners, but I don't know which one actually works. I've been fighting this for a decade and I'm tired of playing the guessing game with which product will work.

I'm looking for a specific product that definitely works and isn't going to cost $20 for a tiny bottle.
In response to ssyr - I've heard that the smell and taste of the garlic lingers on your nails. Maybe that's inaccurate, but that's why I haven't tried it.

Home Beauty & Hygiene Reviews of the best nail strengtheners

Reviews of the best nail strengtheners
A review of the best products on the market today that treat and strengthen weak fragile nails

Review of the Best Nail Strengtheners

If you are one of the millions of women plagued with weak, brittle, nails I have good news for you. There are products available today which will help to strengthen and improve the condition of your fingernails.Since fingernails and hair are both made of keratin, you will find that products which work for your nails (internally taken of course) may also improve the condition of your hair. With that in mind, there are various products and forms that nail strengthening products come in for strengthening your nails.

These include vitamins, herbal formulas, nail creams, nail polishes and topcoats.
First there is GNC Women's Hair, Skin & Nails Formula, Tablets 60 ea that costs about $10.00.This product treats your nails from the inside out.It contains 19 ingredients, vitamins, minerals, and herbs. They are: Vitamin A;Vitamin C; Vitamin D; Vitamin E; Thiamin (B1); Riboflavin (B2); Niacin (B3); Folate,Folic Acid,Folacin; Biotin; Calcium; Phosphorus; Zinc; Boron; MSM Methylsulfonyl-methane; Hydrolyzed Gelatin; L-Cysteine; L-Methionine; Horsetail Rush Herb Extract; Lutein. It is recommended that you take two tablets daily with food.

As you may have noticed, GNC Women's Hair, Skin, and Nails Formula contains hydrolyzed gelatin. Gelatin has long been regarded as one of the premier nail strengtheners. You can purchase Gelatin in your local grocery store. So my next review is Knox flavored Gelatin.

Knox for Nails, Gelatine Dietary Supplement, Orange Flavor 14 servings (it comes in packets) and costs under $10.00. Just take one packet daily as directed and you should see results within 3 months.

Next, there is Barielle Nail Strengthener Cream a 1 oz. jar costs about $18.00.This cream is used to strengthen horse's hooves. You use it twice a day rubbing the cream over and around the fingernails painted or unpainted.

Nutra Nail has two nail polish type strengtheners. They are Maximum Hardener and Maximum Strengthener. The Maximum Hardener costs about $5.00 and the Maximum Strengthener costs about $8.00. The Nutra Nail Maximum Hardener is recommended for soft weak nails. These are the types of nails that are very fragile and break easily. This hardener contains silk and nylon fibers.Apply to clean dry nails, let dry and add another coat. For best protection, apply every other day.

Nutra Nail Maximum Strengthener is recommended for nails that are hard to grow, nails that have layers which peel.Nutra Nail Maximum Strengthener utilizes the newest technology in nail strengtheners and actually bonds the layers of the nail together.Apply to clean dry nails, let dry and add another coat. You may use it alone or with nail polish, and for best results, apply every other night.

OPI Nail Treatments Nail Envy, Natural Nail Strengthener, Matte is another nail polish type strengthener. It costs about $18.00. This product is formulated to strengthen brittle weak nails.Apply two coats, and then apply every other day for maximum benefits.

As you can see, there are various products on the market today to help give you the beautiful strong nails you have always wanted, from vitamins and powders to creams and nail polishes. So don't be ashamed of your nails anymore, try one of these products and have the nails of your dreams.

Nail polish suggestions?

Ash

I used to be hooked on acrylics, but I've been running low on money so I decided to switch to at-home manicures for a while. Recently I've grown to LOVE matte pastel shades. I currently have Orly's Ancient Jade (http://www.vampyvarnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Orly-Ancient-Jade.jpg) on my nails & will do OPI's Mod About You (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&biw=1440&bih=719&q=opi+mod+about+you&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g3&aql=&oq=) next.

What are some other pretty spring shades that you'd recommend? Is Essie nail polish as good as they say?
I have a $100 gift card to Ulta, so if I can find it there, even better. :)

Nail Polish question?

to_sassy4_

1. Why do dark colors leave your nails with a yellowish color?
2. How can you get rid of this yellowish color?

My nails are natural and although I love dark reds, purples and browns, I also like the french look. But I hate that my nails have this funky color to them. HELP

Answer
I might be a male but being a automotive paint expert I know a thing or two about fingernail polish as they are both chemically the same except that polish has glycerin added to it for shelf life.

To prevent the discolor of the nail, first apply a coat of clearcoat as a base. Then apply color and then another coat of clear. The first coat of clear will seal your nail and prevent the color from embedding itself into the pores of the nail.

To get rid of the yellow you can try to soak the nails in acetone, fingernail polish remover. This will help lighten it some but most likely you will have to let the yellow grow out. Won't take that long.

I had been trying to make a 60 second drying fingernail polish back around 1997 but Revlon beat me to the punch.

how to organize my nail polish?

Q. please help me! i have 24 nail art pens, 24 nail polishes and some other things like a nail file, cuticle stick, hand cream and french manicure nail tips i need somewhere to store. at the moment i have them all stood up on a shelf in my bookcase in rows but it is really hard to access because when i try and reach something at the back, i end up knocking loads of them over! the shelf is too small to fit on a shoe box and all my drawers are taken, and i have no makeup bags that are big enough.

what is a good way to organise them (i would preferably put them in colour order or put my favourites at the front and the ones i dont use at the back).

thanks <3
haha i know and i'm only 13 :)
WHAT I MEANT WAS HOW SHALL I STORE THEM AS I DON'T WANT THEM ON A SHELF ANYMORE

Answer
I have mine in clear boxes. On box if full of nail files, top coat, base coat, cream, stuff like that. The other is the actual polish's. I divide them by brand and then by color. So I have all my Chanel's and they're lined up from lightest to darkest, then essie's, again lightest to darkest and so on.

What's the best way to apply sheer nail polish?

tooinvolve

In several thin coats? Or 1 or 2 heavy coats? My polish always looks streaky.

Answer
Hi,
Applying nail polish is also an art. Do not skip this guide on how to apply nail polish. It is possible to get beautiful hands and nails in just few minutes.

Regular nail care and an occasional manicure are the best ways to get beautiful nails. Neat, clean and well manicured nails add charm to your personality. Here is your own guide to get beautiful and attractive nails.

Remove the old nail polish

You will need some cotton balls and a nail polish remover (acetone) to get rid of the old nail polish. Take some nail polish remover on the cotton ball and press it on the nail for a few seconds. Wipe out the old nail polish with the same cotton. Make sure that you have removed the entire nail polish residue properly. Do not use nail polish remover too often, as it can harm your nails and cuticles.

Remove cuticles

Nail cuticles keep bacteria away from entering into the body. Proper care of nail cuticles boost the growth of nails. Invest in a cuticle remover and cuticle stick also known as orange stick. Push your cuticles behind with the cuticle stick after softening them with the help of the cuticle remover. Be careful while using the cuticle remover, avoid applying force.

Shape your nails

Make use of the emery board to give a nice shape to your nails. Maintain one direction and file nails from corners to the center. Sharp-corner square nail shape is now in. Long and oval shape nails look stunning but you need to be extra careful with them. If you really want to save efforts and time to manicure then rounded and short shape nails are for you. Just a few minutes of filing and you will get the desired shape.

Clean your hands

Soak your hands into warm soapy water to get your hands free of dusts, old nail varnish remains, dead skin and oil. A few drops of lemon juice into warm water would be the substitute to deep cleanse your hands. Dry your hands with towel. Now you are almost ready to get your nails painted.

Apply base coat

You are on your way to get glamorous nails. Varnish you fingernails or toenails with nail gloss. Nail Gloss keeps your nails sparkling and moisturised.

Apply nail paint

Now it is time to decorate your nails with colour or texture of your choice. Combining two shades of colours can give wonderful effects. Multicolor shades can also be used to beautify your nails. Start applying strokes of the nail polish from the base and work upwards.

To prevent nail enamel from getting damaged make sure that you wipe out excessive nail polish from the tips of the nails. Let the first coat of nail polish dry before applying the second coat. Application of two coats of nail paint gives the smooth texture and makes it appear even. Let the enamel dry completely. You can use a blow dryer to dry the nail polish completely and save time.

Apply top coat

Top coat is also called as sealer as it seals the nail paint. Top coat prevents nail paint from chipping or cracking. Any transparent nail polish can be used to give the top coat. Top coat will help your nail polish last longer.

Moisturise your hands

Apply a good quality hand moisturiser to your hands, cuticles and skin around nails to protect them. Hand moisturiser is the essential thing to carry in your handbag, so your hands will never go dry.

How to get French manicure?

Women are always fascinated with neat and clean looks they get with the French manicure. Get done with cleaning, trimming and shaping your nails. Apply the base coat. Get âtip guidesâ from market which help to cover the lower part of the nails and help to locate the curve of your fingernails.

Cover the open part of your fingernail tips with white nail polish. Let the white coat dry completely. Remove the nail guides and coat your nail with a nail polish that is either pale pink or light beige. Apply two coats of nail polish. Let the last coat dry. Apply the top coat to add sheen to your nails. You are all set to flaunt your well groomed nails.

Avoid nail biting and cuticle picking for the well being of your nails. Add lots of proteins and nutrients in your diet. Healthy and strong nails can depict your health. Wear cotton gloves while washing and cleaning. Massage your hands and fingernails with body oil before going to bed.

Hit the market today and buy all the essential make-up products you will need to groom your nails. Make your own manicure kit. Add the craziest shades of pink and blue to your collection. Go out of the way by wearing black nail polish to show your wilder side or opt for an elegant French manicure to put forth a ladylike look. Now start practicing to say thank you, when you get showered by al those compliments!

Answer
Vanya, this is what helped me and I thought my nails were hopeless.

Over a year and a half ago my doctor advised me to take Vitamin E for my badly picked and bitten nails. I was ready to try anything, believe me! This worked beyond my wildest dreams! My nails are strong and healthy and ugly deformed bumps on my thumb nails disappeared. Now they grow and grow fast! I use a rectangular nail block to keep them a good length (no talons for me!) and I pamper them with good hand lotion and cuticle cream. I use Develop 10, from Amazon, which is a great strengthener as well as being a shiny clear polish that can be reapplied every few days. One trick that I found on my own is a real winner - I clasp my hands together while watching TV, sometimes massaging in hand cream at the same time. I also have worry stones (from eBay), inexpensive but beautiful smooth stones to rub when stressed) all over the place - in my purse or pocket, on the nightstand, near my couch, and a bowl of them as decor on the coffee table! I check for rough spots or snags on my nails regularly and go after them with the nail block so that no breakage will occur. I even use the nail block for dry, hard places on the skin around my nails, leaving nothing to bite or pick. I am very satisfied to have, finally, a routine that works!

NOTE: Also, you will need to push back your cuticles so you don't get painful hangnails. Soak your nails in warm soapy water for a few minutes to soften them. You can get orange sticks at any drugstore. Put a bit of cotton on the end and push the cuticles back gently.

"An orange stick is basically a catch all tool in the world of nail art and nail care maintenance. They have a variety of more or less unrelated uses that can come in handy. One side of the stick has a pointed end, while the other has a flat angled shape similar to a flat head screw driver. Both sides have a variety of applications. They cost very little. For example:

- Use the pointed end to clean under the free edge at the end of a treatment. If you do this, you should discard the orange stick afterwards as a safety precaution.

- The angled end can be used to even out the cuticle, smoothing out any irregularities. This is basically an alternative to using a hoof stick.

- These sticks can be a great tool for cleaning up parts of the skin that have been touched with nail polish. If the polish is still wet, you can just use a plain stick to remove it. If the polish is still dry, try dipping the stick in nail polish remover first.

- This can be a great tool to use during practice. Attach a plastic tip to the end of the stick and then hold the stick in place while applying an overlay or nail art design.

Each order of orange sticks that you place with us comes in a resealable, easy to store plastic bag containing ten sticks."

Best of luck to you, Vanya! There IS hope!

EDIT: Ooops! http://www.vivalanails.co.uk/orange-sticks.html

Do you think a 3.5 year old is too young for nail polish?

=^.^=

When I'm doing my nails my daughter is always asking to have hers done..
I mean, I figure it's not necessarily bad for her in any way, I just feel like she'd look silly going out in public with painted nails at her age.. What do you think?

Answer
No, my little girl loves having her nails painted. I keep the colours neutral to nearly match the colour of her nails. If she wants it, its not going to harm her. And if your worried people will stare just remove it before going out. Or use finger paints on her nails, that way when she washes her hands it will come off.

How do you get a 3 year old to stop the bad habit of nail bitting?

foxigyrl

Answer
there are few things you can do

Nail biting from such an Early age starts because of boredom or attention. Give him attention and special treatment when you cut his nails. Show him positive and loving attention.. as if you ignore him when he is happy and now he sees you show at him because he bite: he has you attention and that is most NB for him.

Cut his nails and make it as a treat so he will look forward to it. Buy nice cream and massage his little hands every night and love him love him love him!!

There is so many ways:
1. polish
2. bitter liquid
3. some put chillies on..

at this stage .. child will cry few times and then eventually will get used to it.. and get you attention (negative or not again)

Best is LOVE!!! That is the recipe

NAIL-BITING
Backing Off a Nervous Habit

Many children bite their nails, says Paul Kechijian, M.D., clinical associate professor of dermatology and chief of the nail section at New York University Medical Center. Usually they grow out of the habit, and nagging them about it only makes the situation worse.

What can you do if your child can't or won't keep her nails out of her mouth? First, understand why she does it.

''Nail-biting is a nervous habit that's often a symptom of anxiety or insecurity,'' says William Womack, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Child Psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine and codirector of the Stress Management Clinic of Children's Hospital and Medical Center, both in Seattle. ''It's your child's way of comforting herself.''

Figure out what's eating your child, and you're halfway to getting her to stop eating her nails. Eventually, most children stop biting their nails when they start to care how their nails look--or when their friends start to notice. Meanwhile, try some of these creative solutions.

Help your child understand. Enlist your child's cooperation by helping her understand why she's biting her nails. ''Explain that sometimes people bite their nails because they worry a lot or are upset and nervous,'' says Dr. Womack. For example, ask her if she does it when relatives visit, when she's meeting new friends or when she's trying hard to learn something new. Your child may be better able to control the habit if she can talk about the stresses she's experiencing, according to Dr. Womack.

Nail down a deal. Ask your child if her nail-biting bothers her. If, and only if, your child wants to stop biting her nails, you and she can talk about a ''contract,'' suggests Dr. Womack.

For instance, would she consider not biting her nails for a dime a day? Or for a week--in exchange for a visit to an amusement park? Would she appreciate a new watch of her own for not biting her nails for a month?

Keep a chart of successful non-nail-biting days, then reward her for compliance with the ''deal,'' says Dr. Womack.

nail polish and remover??

mommy2408

are they bad during pregnancy??

i wasn't using them by my stepsister was, i was not in the room, i didn't really think anything of it till now.

should i be concerned that i was in the house while it was done??

25.4 weeks pregnant

Answer
Unless you work in a nail salon, your exposure to the fumes in nail polish and remover is minimal. Not enough of the chemicals in these products are absorbed into the skin to hurt the baby. You can polish your own nails if you want. And if they're anything like mine...stronger than ever and growing like weeds...you should take advantage of it! Good luck and congrats!

Nail polish for pregnant women?

thepinkpri

I'm doing my friend's nails for our friend's wedding, but my friend is pregnant, I think about 4 months. She's past the 1st trimester, I know that much. She wants a french mani and obviously can't go to salons because of the fumes and apparantly I can't use Sally Hansen products or Seche Vite topcoat? Any reccomendations for what I should use? I typically use Essie products. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Any nail polish is fine as long as you do it in a well ventalated area. I do think that sally hansen has a stronger smell though. I used essie nail polish my whole pregnancy and was fine. Just open a window when you do it.

Nail salon question??????

lexy h

This is a bit of an odd question,But I'm really wondering. Is there any good nail salons in Knoxville that do like nail art?(like the rhinestones and things you see on peoples nails occasionally?) or do you have to do them yourself?I love these nails,And I was wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere that could do this. Thanks if you can,If not thanks anyways. ^^

Answer
Not familiar with Knoxville, but whenever I'm searching for a recommendation for a new place of business I use Yelp. If you have an iPhone(or maybe even a Blackberry) there's a free app for it, and here is their website: www. yelp.com I found my hair colorist and dentist on this site....LOVE it!

How do I fix my jeans that I spilled nail polish all over?

Kari

It's already dried, and the stain won't come out. My friends said maybe I could sew on some beads or patches to over it up. Or maybe just cut the stained part out and make it into a miniskirt. What do u think?

Answer
If the nail polish remover with acetone (a must) doesn't take it out, then make it a decoration. Try a small area with the polish remover first, to see what it does to the fabric.
"If you get a lemon, make lemonade." It's an old saying, but it really applies here. If the polish won't come out, paint over it, sew around it on zig-zag stitch, then cut the hole out, put beads on it, cut it into a skirt. All of those will be fun and give you a new look. Google decorated jeans or jean art or denim art, see what others have done to their jeans.

There's a brand called "Priti Polish" That is free from known carcinogenic chemicals and is created from a soy and corn base.

You can find this brand in many health food stores and online from the Gaiam catlogue (in the link). Gaiam is the company famous for their yoga and exercise related products. The Gaiam catalog also carries many other environment friendly cosmetics.

What are some good Brands of Non-Toxic/Natural Nail Polish?

Q. Thanks!

Answer
There is no purely nontoxic nail polish, but a few brands have lower chemicals.
Refreshingly Free Fingernail Polish
No Miss Nail Polish
Sante Nail Polish
L'Oreal Paris Jet-Set Quick Dry Nail Enamel does not use DBP, formaldehyde, or toluene

Acquarella is water-based and non-toxic- probably your best bet

I CAN'T paint my nails(so frustrating)!!!!!!!?

Abby

I'm SO sick and tired of not being able to paint my nails!! I can't aford manicures every week, and every time i try to paint my nails my hands shake. Even if they dont shake, it sitll turns out HORRIBLE. I've tried EVERYTHING! Regular nail polish, nail art pens. It's bad enough that I can't even paint my left hand (I'm right-handed0 but then when i try to paint my right hand!! OH BOY!! It looks like a five year old tried painting my nails!!! And all my friends paint their own nails, and one of my friends does such a beautiful job on her nails. They always look flawless! Is there any like, nail painting class I can take or something?? seriously, I wanna know.

Answer
Paint your nails and let it dry it can look so sloppy on your skin but when it dries wash it off with hot/warm water it comes off right away. trust me I can't paint my nails and I've been doing it like forever.

I'm fourteen and like doing a lot of colours in my paintings
for thoes who didnt know who it is.
its Bob Marley

Answer
Beautiful work. Colorful and very expressive. If your intent was to show emossion you nailed it. This is a very happy and positive painting. For a fourteen year old you have very good hands. Keep the brush on the canvas as they say, and as a tip for the future try not telling people your age. As far as I'm concerned you could be 93. Unfortunatelly artists tend to be pre-judged by things like age, cultural background, lifestyle and education. This is a shame, because art should be judged by the piece more so than the artist. If only one person in the world likes your artwork then you can concider yourself a success. A good artist will always wonder if their good enough, a great artist doesn't have time to ask because their too busy creating. Paint paint paint, because someone is waiting to see what's next.
