In 1989 the Oakland Raiders won their season opener 40-14 against the San-Diego Chargers. After losing the next three games, the young coach Mike Shanahan was terminated and Coach Art Shell was promoted. As a head coach, he enjoyed success behind a strong running game. Coach Shell was able to hold the job until the 1994 season. Coach Mike Shanahan became head coach for the Denver Broncos in the National Football League. He led the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999. He has an overall record of 146-95-0, and is considered one of the most successful coaches of all time. Nice firing Mr. Davis.

Fast forward to the present, the Oakland Raiders have a very powerful and dynamic running game lead by the rookie Darren McFadden. Another young coach has been hired by Al Davis, another older, more mature; coach is waiting to replace him. After a scathing loss to the Denver Broncoâs in week one, and a nail biting loss to a very good Buffalo Bills team, current coach Lane Kiffin is on the hot seat in Oakland. Everyone in the NFL and many fans watch with morbid curiosity. They are all wondering will this be the 2nd coach in the history of the Raiders who is fired during the regular season.
Perhaps we should rewind instead of fast forward? In 1963 The Raiders hired San Diego Chargers assistant Al Davis as their new Coach and General Manager. His first move was to give the team a new look, as they take the field in silver and black uniforms. The new look would work wonders as the Raiders won their first game over the Oilers in Houston 24-13. The Raiders would also win their 2nd game a week later, but a 4 game losing streak would quickly have them crashing back to earth. However, the Raiders would recover and would win their last 8 games to finish with a 10-4 record, as Clem Daniels rushed for 1,099 yards. However, the Raiders would have to settle for 2nd place, despite sweeping the first place Chargers.

Interesting, Al Davis, the current owner, who covets power and calls the shots, was given power in order to have success. Lane Kiffin, another young coach for the Oakland Raiders canât even hire his own coordinators. Al Davisâs early success was just that, in 1964 the Raiders stumbled out of the gate losing their first 5 games. With all hopes of the playoffs gone the Raiders would play solid football the rest of the way only losing 2 of their remaining 9 games to finish with a 5-7-2 record. Al Davis was replaced by John Rauch as coach in 1965 after finishing 2nd place in the AFL West.

When Al Davis hired Lane Kiffin he compared him to previous young Raiders head coaches. He allowed Lane Kiffin to promise a powerful explosive offense. He then allotted the young coach zero control over the team. Itâs well known that Oakland is the place coaches go when they have no other options. If Oakland calls offering a job, you call other teams and beg for a position. Al Davis will not pay coaches what they are worth, he will not give up any control, and he will fire you based on his own whims. It is reported that Mr. Davis still has complete control over this franchise but sometimes does not show up to the office until 430 in the afternoon.

Those of us that have followed the Raiders for years consider Al Davis akin to Captain Ahab, steering the whaling ship Pequod (The Raiders Franchise) in maniacal pursuit of Moby-Dick (a Mike Shanahan type coach). What Ahab forgot was that Moby-Dick had already destroyed his previous ship, and bit his leg off. Al Davis had a great young coach, he fired him, and heâs getting ready to do this again.

Be careful Mr. Davis, if you fire Lane Kiffin, you could be creating another monster.

Answer
You should be writing for a magazine lol... Al Davis is an idiot, and needs to start realising maybe he should start giving his coaches more control. Maybe he should see what's up with John Madden.

Are vocal/singing teachers any good?

Teenage Dr

Is it worth getting a vocal teacher to help me with singing. I have never sang solo infront of anyone before and i am not very good at singing but i would love it if i was much better at singing, would a vocal teacher help or are they a waste of money?

Answer
The person that said 90% of famous artists don't work with a voice teacher is naive and doesn't know the real industry. If unrealistic American Idol has a vocal coach on hand to train pretty good singers who made it through, if TV shows like Making of the Band has a vocal coach on hand with the label, wouldn't the REAL WORLD without a camera be even more in depth as far as training? Mariah Carey's mother was her voice teacher (she was an opera singer), Whitney Houston's mother trained her (she was a professional back up singer), Usher, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkston, all of these artists had professional voice training. Most people will not record you until you've done work with one, and it shows in a performance. Unless you are some sort of screamer of grunge (your vocal career will come short doing that), if you want to be considered a professional you will work with a vocal coach in some way, shape or form. Even in the pop industry. If you want to be a theatrical or opera singer, you will train vigorously throughout your whole career working with one. So please don't listen to that advice. Even the ones who aren't considered great vocalists had voice training so they wouldn't sound like nails on a chalkboard. LOL! So don't believe that. THERE ARE NO WEBSITES OR BOOKS THAT CAN REPLACE A VOICE TEACHER. Voice teachers cater to your specific problems. Websites and books can't do that. Plus, they aren't going to give away all the info they know because of greed. They want you coming back for more.

A voice teacher is like a personal trainer, art teacher, a professor who teaches that upcoming doctor how to operate during surgery. They are the ones who take raw instruments with potential and cultivate them into great singers. I cannot tell you the worth my first voice teacher was when I first started. I was able to win competitions, get into music schools and scholarships, all kinds of things that I couldn't vocally do on my own she taught me how to do it. People often think good singers are good because they are naturally good. This isn't true. A good athlete has vigorous training, and so does a good singer. Our job as a singer is to make it look easy, so people think singing comes easy. It really doesn't. It is so much more to singing than people realize. So if you are having problems producing on your own like many of us, the only way to make it better is to hire a voice teacher.

Make sure the teacher has good credentials, and that you are making progress. If they don't have these things, find another one. There are fake voice teachers parading like they know the mechanics of voice. You'll know a good voice teachers by their fruit the first day you walk in. So call around to arts academies and private studios, do your research. Ask how much they charge, what is their experience and degree specialization. You have the right to know these things. Get a mock or starter lesson beforehand to see if you and the teacher have chemistry. I promise you a good voice teacher is NOT a waste of money. If it wasn't for my vocal coaches, I wouldn't have a career, and many of your favorite artists wouldn't have one. Go for it and you will be awestruck at the improvements just after a couple of lessons! Trust me!
