I use nail polish on my nails all the the time and I want to know if any of the chemicals in nail polish can affect my nails.

Answer
Your nails DO NOT need oxygen they are not a living breathing thing , they are made from dead skin sells witch have keritinized .

Nail polish and removers can cause a surface de-hydration the full name for this is pseudoleukonychia this is what happens when the oils have been temporarily striped from the hard surface layers of your nail plate , these oils can be replaced VERY quickly using a cuticle oil such as OPI avo plex , or CND 's solar oil , the oil in our nail plates will help with keeping the nails flexibly witch in term means stronger! , hardeners make nails brittle . The esyest way to understand this is to think of a spiders web and a piece of steel the same size, the web is the strongest as it will flex under pressure the steel will bend and brake,

The yellowing effect some have talked about is left over color pigment normaly from red pigmented polishes such as brown' purple's and pinks and of course reds lol, this is very easily avoided by using a good quality base coat before polishing.

Although your nail is dead and will continue to grow (shed) it can not have a long term damage (the matrix not the nail plate can) the nail itself can not become allergic to anything but! The surrounding skin CAN! This is why when you go to a good salon to have your nails painted we techs always try to leave a tiny margin around the nail that is free from polish or product.

Now more and more professional nail color brands are RE-inventing them sealfs as "3 FREE " this means with out the 3 main nail product skin irritant ,so they have removed the Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP.

The main brands on the market that have done this and become 3-FREE are CND color effects , CND shellac , Sparitual & ,Jessica

What is the longest lasting brand of nail polish?

I want something I can go pick up at most stores and is not to much money. I am sick of nail polish that starts chipping off the first day.

Answer
I suggest putting a base coat and a top coat that you can get cheap at Walgreens by Sinful Colors. I love the brands:

-Sinful Colors ($4 Walgreens)
-Sally Hansen ($5-$7 depending on type)
-Pure Ice ($3 Walgreens)
-Heaven (I don't know if they still manufacture it or not, but it's really good, one coat is enough and it won't chip for a while. Check online)
-China Glaze

Hope this helps, if you have any questions, please feel free to email me about it. :)
