We bought two old paintings of listed Danish artists from a Copenhagen gallery but they said that there's no board at the back? Is this usual? Thanks

p.s: we know nothing about art! total ignorance when it comes to art unfortunetly...but trying to change that!
The paintings are already framed.

Answer
It is not unusual that canvases do not have backing board on them. There has been some disagreement over that practice among many framers, artists and conservationists. It seems to stem from the opinion that these works must be able to "breath" as some would suggest. In other words allow the art to expand and contract freely with temperature and humidity changes. However canvases do not breath. When some canvases are backed one may find holes in the backs for air circulation. Again air circulation is not needed. The only reasons to use a backing board are to protect the painting from dents, tears and punctures and insects that may feed on the material. Remember that one still can damage the painting from the front. If the painting you acquire is valuable or irreplaceable in addition to a firm backing one should also consider the use of ultra violet filtering Plexiglas with a proper spacer between the art and the Plexiglas. One last note. The painting should be installed in a manner that is secure but not restrictive. Not nailed but rather some type of offset hardware. If there is any concern about mold or mildew attacking the art, one sets themselves up for damages whether one backs the canvas or not. Always handle, store and hang art in stable reasonable environment. I would not pass up a great painting because of poor framing as it can be re-framed.

What can I get my family for Christmas - little brother and dad especially?

I was thinking of going homemade this year. I personally think these are the best gifts( next to electronices - lol), and have a sentimental value. For my mom I was thinking of a beautiful hand-made clay pot I made in art class, and a homemade beauty with bath scrubs, home remedies, molded soap and cute things like that. What I'm really stumped on is gifts for my little brother and dad. Last year, I got my lil bro a spy kit, and my dad - a cool wood project. This year, I'm not really sure what to get them. I was thinking of doing a little scavenger hunt made out of origami(he's a huge fan next to me) gift boxes with coupons, trinkets, and clues leading to the actual gift for my lil bro( 7) . The problem is, I don't know what to do for the actual gift. As for my dad, I am totally stumped. What are some good inexpensive gift ideas? Thx and 10 points for best answer!
BF and Friends also argh!
