Q. What is their average lifespan? Are the good for first time dog owners? How much exercise do they need? Anything else useful that you think I should know before getting one.

*Don't worry, thought and research will go into this decison if I decide to get a Newfie. I know that a dog is a lifetime commitment. That is why i am researching all of my options.

coat: water resistent; coarse outer coat, dense under coat. the long coat is flat, dense and water resistant, and sheds twice each year in spring and fall.
grooming: daily brushing, weekly comb-out and ear cleaning, regular hair and nail trimming. regular grooming is necessary to remove dead hair and keep the coat shiny and tangle-free.
height: average height for males is 28 inches at the shoulders. females are 2 inches less. (which is averaged 26 inches at the shoulder).
weight: males are 150 lbs. females are 30 lbs less. (around 120 lbs).

now some basic info about the dog:
the Newfie is a robust, family-loving dog, equally at home in the water and on land. this large, strong, active dog is capable of heavy work, yet the breed's gentleness, even temper and devotion make the Newf an ideal companion for child or adult. in Newfoundland, this dog was originally used as a working dog to pull nets for the fishermen and to haul logs from the forest for the lumbermen. elsewhere, the Newfie did heavy labor of many kinds, powering the blacksmith's bellow and the turner's lathe. the oily nature of its double coat, which effectively keeps the Newfie from getting wet to the skin, its webbed feet, its deep, broad chest and well-sprung ribs make it a natural swimmer. the Newfie has true instinct for life-saving and is renowned in this role. the Newfie is friendly, easygoing, and loves the outdoors. it's most comfortable in a large home where it will receive daily exercise and lots of time with the family. but many have been seen living in an averaged-sized apartment. (meaning 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom).

now for energy level: 2 out of 5.
exercise requirements: 2 out of 5.
playfulness: 3 out of 5.
affection level: a perfect 5! (awwww!!)
friendliness towards other dogs: 4 out of 5.
friendliness towards other animals: 5 out of 5.
ease of training: 3 out of 5.
watchdog ability: 3 out of 5.
protection ability: 4 out of 5.
grooming: 3 out of 5.
cold weather tolerance: a perfect 5!
hot weather tolerance: 1 out of 5. (which means, he cant be out in the sun for too long or anesthesia will take place!)

some more basic info:
the most important single characteristic of the Newfoundland is sweetness of temperament. the Newfie is calm, patient, easygoing, gentle and amiable, a friend to all. if its family is threatened, however, the Newfoundland can act protectively.

major health concerns are SAS (aka short attention span), pulmonic stenosis (aka a medical condition in which outflow of blood from the right ventricle of the heart is obstructed at the level of the pulmonic valve. this results in reduction of flow of blood to the lungs.), elbow dysplasia, CHD (aka canine hip dysplasia.), and gastric torsion (aka bloat. dysplasia means unusual development or growth of a part of the body such as an organ, bone, or cell, including the total absence of such a part).
minor health concerns: OCD (aka obsessive-compulsive disorder), entropion (aka the turning in of the edges of the eyelid (usually the lower eyelid) so that the lashes rub against the eye surface), vWD (aka vomiting and wasting disease), and cataracts (aka a cloudy or opaque area in the lens of the eye).
occasionally seen health problems: epilepsy.
suggested tests: hip, elbow, cardiac, blood (eye).
NEWFIES DO NOT TOLERATE HEAT WELL.SOME ARE SENSITIVE TO ANESTHESIA!

for and function of the Newfoundland:
the Newfoundland is a large, heavy-boned, powerful dog that is strong enough to pull a drowning man from rough seas and imposing enough to make an effective guard dog. it is slightly longer than it is tall. its gait gives the impression of effortless power, with good reach and drive. its double coat consists of a soft, dense undercoat and a coarse, moderately long and straight outer coat. its soft expression reflects its benevolent and dignified temperament.

starting from where i first say "now some basic info about the dog", i got that information from a website. the rest, is my prior knowledge.
