Are there any artist who are well known for this? My gf decided to make a painting using only nail polish. Could that be possibly toxic or something? Im curious.
Im interested in finding specific names of good artists who have used nail polish.

If I painted ear gauges with nail polish, would my ears get infected or something?

dinofruit2

My ears are currently stretched to a size 0. I wanted to go up to 00. The problem is I can't find any stretchers I like. They're all like 20 bucks each. Pointless because you don't even use them that much! There are some on sale for like 5 bucks. But they're really ugly. If I painted over them with nail polish, would it make my ears irritated?
Thanks!

Answer
if you only paint the ends then no but the part thats inside the hole yes

What are some fun crafts to make with ribbon?

maty

Answer
there are plenty of beautiful things you can make with ribbons. a lot depends on the width & type of ribbon you are using.

- artificial ribbon flowers - arrange in ikebana style or any simple vase arrangement
- silk ribbon embroidery
- use for mobiles, curtains, etc - string beads, CDs, pipes, bells, etc. through them & let them hang at different lengths.
- weave to make mats, coasters, rugs, picture frames, book-covers, etc. Add/sew an edge for stability & to avoid fraying.
- weave to make mini quilts that can be used as a wall-decoration/piece too.
- braid to make belts, mats, rugs, coasters, etc.
- use to make bracelets, headbands, bandanas, wristbands, etc.
- weave into a square or rectangle. add some lining/batting. then fold & sew on 3 sides to make a purse. braid some more ribbons & attach to make the handle of the purse. attach a few small kawasaki roses made from ribbon, to adorn. :-)
- use for couching or as ornamental edges for other sewing projects.
- tie/glue ribbon bows or flowers to ornamental bottles, jars, closet potpourri satchets, gifts, etc. to adorn & beautify.
- make a mosaic of diff kinds & colors of ribbons. you can also create a landscape-type picture using the diff shades & frame.

here are a few sites i found for you, to get you started.

hubpages.com/hub/Ribbon-Crafts
home.howstuffworks.com/ribbon-crafts.htm/printable

familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/season/specialfeature/...
kids-paper-crafts.suite101.com/.../how_to_make_paper_photo_quilts

BTW, to stop ribbons from fraying, you can apply either clear nail polish or Fraycheck or even diluted PVA glue. or cut at a 45 degree angle.

ADDITION :
- make board games, eg. tic-tac-toe, etc. You can make any of your fav board games with your fav ribbons/colors. use beads, buttons, etc. for each player. in fact you can cover buttons with ribbon too or make little kawasaki roses as playing coins. OR create any New game.
- make little raggedy dolls or to hang in the car. you can also use the ribbons to beautify a doll's house : use for upholstery, linen, lawn, etc.
- use as bookmarks
- use for filigree in greeting cards

hope these help
all the very best & have fun :-))

How can I creatively decorate my kids rooms without painting?

nail art for 8 year old image

af

I have a 7 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl. I need ideas on decorating their rooms without painting them. Thanks.

Answer
1. Cover wall space with your child's own original artwork.
2. For young children, use crepe paper on a roll (available at teacher's supply or craft shops) for finger, sponge, or other tactile painting. You can lay the paper flat, let your child paint to her/his heart's content, and then hang the finished painting from your child's wall. Another method is to hang blank sheets from ceiling to floor like wallpaper and let your child 'body paint' right onto the wall. This can be a fun activity for the whole family, as long as you don't mind getting a little messy yourself. Make handprints, footprints, and splatters. It's like coloring the walls, but without the parental wrath and permanent damage.
3. Older children may already have a collection of artwork from school art classes. Turn your child's room into a mini-museum by framing your child's drawings and paintings with paper, pegboard, or wooden frames, and hanging them throughout the room.
4. Finally, pre-teens will enjoy the time-honored tradition of the magazine collage. Use a removable, non-damaging adhesive (such as Sticky Tack) to arrange clipped pictures of movie stars, favorite musicians, and coveted shoes all over the walls. The best part of this decorating technique is that your child can add to it every day.
5. Liven up white walls.
6. If your child's heart is set on changing the color of the walls entirely, try using wallpaper - without actually pasting it up. Take a trip to the home goods store and pick out paper samples or remnants. Don't worry if the remnants aren't large enough to cover the whole wall - creating a collage of different patterns and colors is part of the fun.
7. To add texture, choose some fabric remnants from a crafts store to hang as tapestries. If your child sleeps in a bunk bed, fabrics can be hung from the sideboards to create a "tent". This can make the room feel bigger, and creates a great place for pretend!
8. Add 3-dimensional interest.
9. Hanging mobiles aren't just for babies. Fill some space in the room by fashioning a "chandelier" out of old toys, stuffed animals, or any lightweight objects. Older children might enjoy making mobiles that reflect their hobbies. Baseball cards, old ballet slippers, and sports ribbons are all good materials.
10. Hanging fabric from the walls - attached only at the top with some neat finishing nails - adds a splash of color to a room, and you can always take it down. Also try hanging picture frames (with nails through the fabric) on top of the fabric sheet to have a nice picture collage.
11. Add decorative knobs to the furniture. Thousands are available now, you'll find one that will relate to something important in your child's life - their favorite sport, an animal they love... You can even get them really involved by letting them paint their own knobs!
12. Self-stick, peelable, wallpaper borders, murals, and designs. They do not damage the walls, yet add a lot of color and character. Has your son out-grown ABC's and cartoon cars? Peel them off, wash the walls, stick on the Batman borders and stickers. They are available at many places that sell wallpaper as well as on-line. They will last for a year at least. Actually, these self-stick borders are nice for adding an easy splash of color to any room. Some of these products are 'cheap-looking' (like shelf paper), but many are indistinguishable from quality wallpaper.
13. Remember to hang art and other decorations low enough for the child to appreciate... and yes, touch. Too many nicely-decorated children's rooms have the pictures, shelves, etc. all at adult height. Who cares if it looks like it came out of a magazine? Whose room is it anyway? Put that ABC poster down at toddler level so she can appreciate it.

Any activities, crafts, or recipies you can share? The girl is very creative, and loves art and hands on stuff.

Answer
Make slime:Materials (Corn Starch, Water)

Mix 1 cup of corn starch with 1 cup of water. Use your hands to mix it until it is a smooth texture. You can change the texture by adding a 2nd cup of corn starch. Kids love adding food color or paint to make the slime. They have fun making it resemble different icky substances and their imagination is more vivid then most parents want to hear described in detail!

Store in a covered container. It will keep for several days.

i don't use any makeup at all and i am thinking of getting some stuff to start with. what should I get? I also don't have a lot of nail polish. what colors should I get?

Answer
All you need are a good set of tools and some basics and practice. For tools, I suggest you get the Borghese set of brushes from Costco. They are around $20-$25 and have a great range of brushes small to large. The kit even comes with explanations on what each brush is for. It was also recommended in Makeup Artist magazine as a great beginner kit.

A beautiful makeup starts with a good face. A simple routine is:

1. Wash your face with anti-bacterial soap. It is so simple, and it's something my aesthetician friends and cosmetologists taught me.

2. Wash with Ponds Deep Cleanser and Make-up Remover. Very moisturizing and clean.

3. Use a nice toner like Clean and Clear Cooling Daily Pore Toner. Light scent, VERY mild.

4. Moisturizer: Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer. Very light and clean, but also has a 45 SPF. 45 SPF never felt so comfortable before this.

All you really need to look good is some concealer for putting in key areas, not foundation all over the face. I like to use MAC concealers, they have a great texture and blend well. Go in and test them. Just remember not to squeeze out too much because a little bit goes a long way.

If you do want a foundation, a great store brand is Cover Girl's Advanced Radiance. It's a slim pump bottle. The display has something that makes it really simple to find the right shade. Take their little card and hold it to your skin; whichever color disappears against your skin is the shade for you. I found it ingenious because I'm a professional makeup artist and use all sorts of brands from MAC to less known industry standard makeup. Here, you don't have to have any skill and you can still find the perfect makeup shade without having to go to an expensive counter and hope the sales artist gets it right. And honestly, I've hired some of those girls, and their experience ranges from amateur to expert. I don't like to hope for good luck myself. The product is smooth and blends really perfect. It's light and I had no creasing. To get it perfect, grab a mirror and hold the card to your face. Yeah, I said to your skin, so wash your face after, but you'll get the color match exact!

For eyes, if you like a defined brow, use a brow brush (small and cut at an angle, and softly fill. You can always add more product. To do eyeshadow, start with a palette that has many colors so you can practice. Some simple ideas are earthtones or doing one shadow on the lid and then a highlight at the corner of the brow beneath the end of the eyebrow. There are more detailed ideas, but start easy. Experiment in your free time and take pictures so you can see or repeat what you did. A lot of people will also coordinate and take a color or several colors from their outfits. In the beginning, just start with 1 color.

For lashes, Cover Girl Volume Exact is clean and easy. Just do a tight, quick, swirl with the brush to keep the application clean and clump free.

Basically, it's like anything you want to learn to do well: talk to people who do it, like friends, here online, at makeup counters. Practice. Buy good tools and supplies. Everything good doesn't HAVE to be from the counter, but wonderful things ARE at the counter too.

There are wonderful and easy things to do with blushes, creams, lip glosses, liners, lipsticks, but these are also the best places to just start experimenting.

I've put the Makeup 411 site below, it has great breakdowns (explanations and supply lists) of what artists have used on their actors.

Also, I added links that are great starter resources. Makeup Alley is great because it's got lots of reviews on ALL SORTS of products. So far, I've been able to find reviews on EVERY product I typed in, and that's saying a lot for me.

Oh yeah, and whatever you do, when you go to counters, don't believe the hype, don't get intimidated. Makeup is an art and I've met all sorts of people. Everyone can do it. I know I sound like the chef character in Ratatouille, but I'm serious. I have met a lot of people of all types who never did it before, and once I started teaching them, they picked it up and ran with it. Mistakes and success, a sense of beauty, esteem, or creativity, it's all about learning and building and having fun. Experiment with anything you want, from subtle and barely there to cutting edge and pro.

Good luck and have fun,
Margaret

Why is it so hard to find artist mathematicians?

Callie

I'm a senior female art and pure mathematics major and I am told that, that is an odd mix. How come I can't find other similar people? Is it really all that odd? Like I can draw/paint just about anything but I stick to doing surreal stuff and at the same time I like real analysis and doing proofs. My friends that major in just art, they tend to not like math and say that they are bad at it. I don't believe that anyone is truly bad at math, just like art it needs practice, practice, and more practice. My friends that major in just math, they are very analytical and while they are also creative they can barely draw models that display what they are trying to communicate. I find that is a trend actually, I've never come across a professor that could draw on the board exactly what they were trying to convey. Why is it so hard to find a person who likes and excels in both subjects?

Answer
I don't think it is odd. There are just so few mathematicians. Can you think of any mathematician who does anything else? Like a mathematician who is also a discus thrower?

I found no hobbies for Von Neumann, Norbert Wiener, or John Nash.

Maybe mathematics is such a beautiful recreation in itself you do not need anything else.

I had only one prof who was a good illustrator, and he was just beautiful. Instead of writing "f(x) = 2x +1" he would write "f(kittykat) = 2kittycat + 1", with a little picture of a kittycat. Prof Lopez at San Diego State, ca 1967.

You hit the nail on the head when you said mathematicians are so creative, that's true.

Is it possible to get a decent job in the design field with an Associates Degree?

Tristy C

i live in nyc with an a.a.s in communications design (i.e. advertising, graphics) from an accredited art college. would i be able to get a decent-paying job/internship in my field with this degree?

Answer
Of course the type of degree you have impacts your chances of landing a job, and sometimes people will look at your education first when picking through the pile of resumes.

BUT don't despair!
Your portfolio is even more important. Design is neither brain surgery nor rocket science, which must be backed by an academic degree. Design does require someone with an aesthetic eye and the talent to create effective work that perfectly nails what the client wants. If you can show potential employers that you are capable of creating excellent work they won't care if you are self-taught or have a PHD in animal husbandry.

On the pragmatic side,
you are at steep disadvantage, in the current economic situation and especially living in NYC. The job market is more competitive and even more so in NYC's creative industry. You are competing against some of the most talent and degreed creatives from around the globe. Unless you have a substantial portfolio with award-winning work for blue chip clients you don't have much of a chance going up directly against these designers.

Here's are some tips.
1. It definitely can't hurt to go for your dream job at the high profile agency or in-house department at a Fortune 500 company. You should go for it! Trying for and interviewing for great positions can only help you figure out what they are looking for, hone your interviewing skills, get your face out there, and help build your network.
2. Work freelance for a while to build up a strong portfolio. It is still quite possible to make a sustainable living on freelance. You choose your own hours. You choose which projects to take. For the most part you work on your own terms.
3. Apply for a position in an in-house department for a small company or non-profit. You could have security as well as ample opportunity to learn, stretch creatively, and build a strong body of work. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this isn't a shabby way to start.
4. And get cracking on those general and design job hunting strategies! Here are some links to get you started.

You are undoubtedly at a disadvantage, but if you keep at it you will get work. GOOD LUCK!

What is the difference between UV gel nail polish and regular nail polish?

nail polish unhealthy image

blessed*

I just purchased this new product called Nutra Nail UV gel nail polish. It comes with a gel activator and the actual polish, but I'm not seeing the difference between this and regular nail polish. Does anyone know the difference?

Answer
It is suppose to block ultra-violet rays from the sun therefore making the color stay truer longer and also to keep artificial nails from yellowing. But as with any cosmetic application, you should remove it regularity. If the natural nails are not exposed to oxygen and allowed to breathe, they will turn yellow and look unhealthy. So in my opinion, get one that can handle any knocking around you might do in a few days but then remove it and allow the nails to go o'de to natural for a few days. After all, unless you are a life guard how much UV rays are they getting.

What do I do with my old nail polish?

I have several bottles of old nail polish that I don't want anymore, mostly because I found out about all the unhealthy/environmentally damaging toxins in them. I don't want to just throw them in a trash can (because that defeats part of the purpose of getting rid of them). What do I do with them?

Answer
First of all thanks for thinking of our enviorment(:

To dispose of old fingernail polish, the bottles need to be brought to a hazardous waste collection facility. Search online for one of these facilities in your area. Some communities or cities have hazardous waste collection days to collect old cleaning supplies and similar items, and this is another opportunity to properly dispose of your old fingernail polish. If this is impossible for you, some discussion forums suggest leaving the cap off the nail polish to allow it to solidify, then throwing away the bottle. This should not be your first choice, though.

You may not need to throw your old fingernail polish away at all. If the nail polish has started to look dried out and separated, a few drops of nail polish thinner mixed into the bottle can make the fingernail polish appear new again. Do not make the mistake of mixing nail polish remover in the bottle; the nail polish remover will not mix with the polish and the color will be ruined. Nail polish thinner can be found in the cosmetics department of most stores, or can be purchased at a salon. Thinning your nail polish slightly can also make the polish stronger on your nails and less likely to peel off.

If your old nail polishes are still fine, and you've just grown tired of the color or the brand, you might consider giving them to a teenager. Teens enjoy painting bright colors on their nails, and they will probably get some good use out of your old nail polishes and you won't need to throw them in the trash. You might also use old clear nail polish to stop runs in stockings or at the end of shoelaces to prevent fraying.

If you are concerned about the health effects of some of the chemicals found in nail polish, search online for more eco-friendly brands. Some popular nail polish brands are removing or cutting back on the toxic chemicals in the polish, and these results can be found on cosmetic databases online. These databases list the ingredients found in cosmetics and gives them a numerical rating. Even if you do purchase a more eco-friendly fingernail polish, you still need to properly dispose of the remaining polish at a hazardous waste collection facility.

Hope this could help!

What is a good nail polish for home manicures?

nail polish lasts 2 weeks image

Joyce A

I have thin, fragile nails. I like the look of a natural or light polish, but I've always had trouble with the polish chipping after a few days. This happens with both home and salon manicures. I had a gel manicure at a salon and it lasted over 2 weeks, but the polish was hard to remove and I had to go back to the salon for that. I worry that the acetone is too strong for my fragile nails.
I bought some Revlon Colorstay (supposed to last 11 days). I took it to the salon with me when the gel color was removed and had my own polish applied. So far it's been on 3 days with no chips! Does anyone know of any other good polishes that last without chipping or peeling off?
I have also used lots of those nail strengthening products, from the expensive (Nailene, Nail-Tek, Borghese) to the less expensive. There are probably some new ones I haven't tried. I am also taking a supplement for nails (Bioten, Biotin??) but have just started.

Answer
I like the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. It includes base coat, strengthener, and color in one bottle. I brushed on two coats (actually, tossed it on in a flash) last week, and it lasted seven days, even through tons of typing and housework. When I took it off, my nails even felt smoother and healthier.

How do you make nail polish last?

Silver

My nail polish never lasts, no matter what I do. I am apparently very hard of my nails without even knowing it. I've tried several brands of nail polish and I've used top coats and base coats and nothing works. Whenever I paint my nails the polish is chipped in 12 hours. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Answer
i am hard on my nails to. Who wouldv thought typing on keyboards is hard on nails? lol. I found my nail polish chips at the sides then peeled off. Makes your nails look shitty! :(
I got a acrylic overlay put over my nails. This also helped my nails since they are weak and brittle and peel easily. My nail polish stays for weeks! I get my nails done once every 2-3 weeks depending on if i can aford it. The acrylic helps alot BUT it is damaging to your natural nails because some places use little drill type files. Try to find a place that doesnt and it will help!

Otherwise you can buy sally hansen hard as nails clear polish. Its like a glaze. Its really thick! Like really thick! It might have tiny fiberglass particles im not sure. Its got red writting on the bottle and it looks sort of yellowish color not quiet clear.

How to get rid of watercolor stains on clothes?

Recently, at my school, there was a bomb threat while I was in my art class. So, while in a hurry to clean up and such, I got black and yellow watercolor pigments on my white sweater. I've washed it by hand several times now, but there's still a lot of pigment there, it's not as opaque, but still.

And for those wondering, the school's okay.

Answer
Scrub with Clorox Stain Remover.. It works!!! or listen to these steps!
Step 1Figure out what kind of stain it is. Grease stains, juices, wines, sandwich condiments, coffee, ink and chewing gum. We've all fallen victim to most of these. And they are each treated differently. So, make sure you know what it is so you know how to best treat it.

Step 2For grease stains, scrape off the excess solids with a butter knife. Place the stain face-down on a plain white paper towel. Squeeze a small amount of dishwashing liquid on the underside of the stain to break up the grease (hey, it works on dishes), and wait about a minute. Pretreat the the stain with detergent, and wash it on the warmest water setting that particular fabric can endure.

Step 3For juices, wines, coffee, tomato-based sauces and soft drinks, blot the stain with cold water. Then, sprinkle with the stain with salt so it can absorb the liquid. After a moment or two, wipe clean with club soda and pretreat for a wash cycle.

Step 4To get rid of chewing gum, rub the glob of goo with ice to harden it. Then scrape it off with a dull knife and wash.

Step 5 For ink, hold the portion of garment tight over the top of a glass or mason jar. Poor rubbing alcohol slowly over the stain, with your piece of clothing acting as a sieve into the container. Rinse and wash as usual.

Step 6 For most other stains, rinse, treat with stain remover and launder as usual. One exception is nail polish, which you should first rub with acetone (nail-polish remover), and then send through the laundry cycle.

What color are your nails right now?

Q. BQ: What nailpolish brand is it and what is the color name?

My nails are a sparkly turquoise color. The nailpolish brand is O.P.I and the color name is Mermaid to Order.

Answer
Mine are a single layer of hot pink O.P.I. (I forgot the name of the color) with the new Katy Perry for ULTA Shatter Black top coat. Then I have a stripe of silver Color Club nail art color on every nail. It looks pretty cool! :)

I'm redecorating my teenage girl bedroom and I need help?

nail art 101 image

Janet

I am a teenage girl (13) and I'm moving into a bigger room. (It's like a mini-master bedroom,lol.)
I don't know the size of the bedroom but if it helps it has two windows and four walls.
I'm not buying new furniture except a desk and maybe seating.
I really want to decorate a room I will never outgrow till I move out.
Here are my questions:
1. What colors should I paint on the walls? (that matches everything)
2. What colors should I paint on the furniture? (that matches everything)
3. Are there any cute bedding out there? (preferably an inexpensive bed in a bag or quilt)
4. Are wall stickers recommended? List all of the pros and cons.
5. Are there any cool but cheap posters I could buy?
6. Are there any interesting area/accent rugs?
7. How can I organize my room?
8. Any other creative ways to decorate my room?

To make answering my question easier, I will tell you a little about myself.
I love animals especially dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses.
I am very passionate about writing stories.
I love to read, watch movies and TV shows, do art, and use the computer.
I am not necessarily a girly-girl but not a tomboy. (Though, I have more tomboy in me.)
I hate jewerly, makeup, and nail polish. (Dunno that would help with room makeovers.)
I am not into music, sports, and things like that.
I love my stuffed animals and I love candy =D

Thanks for answering and sorry if this is too long.

What is fun about choosing a neutral color is that you can add pops of color in pillows, bedspreads, lamps, through rugs etc.

Using color wheels are fun and you can get ideas here. Start with your neutral and use the wheel to show pops of color

paint brushes and art supply questions?

Can you use nail art brushed on ceramics. I really like how thin they are
No just the brushes not the paint.

Answer
you're asking if "nail art" paint can be brushed on to ceramics, assuming ceramics are fired and glazed already, then you could use nail paints, but if items are dishes and cups, you may not want to place on surfaces where people eat or drink from, and may sure they are washable or dish washer safe, as the paint may crack off from heat and dis lodge into machine gears or block drainage, suggest washing by hand, there are different types of nail polishes and glues and sealers, test patch before covering ,

How can I make my nail polish look glossier?

nail polish for men image

Love Zombi

I got a bunch of different shades of nail polish for Christmas, and a few of them from a brand called China Glaze aren't at all glossy. When they dry they have a dull matte finish and look like I used acrylic paint on them. I'm using a clear top coat to make them look glossy, but I'm wondering if there's any way to eliminate the middle man entirely.

Answer
put a clear coat over it (: some times i mix it in with the base coat but if you put too much it will ruin it so id suggest a test run on a color you don't like first (:

Is there anything I can use as a substitute for nail polish remover?

HiHi!

I know about the clear nail polish alternative, but are there any substances found around the home which could help remove old nail polish? Like soap, detergent, or even rubbing alcohol?

Answer
99% citric acid will remove it quite well. Also, men's British Sterling is faster than nail polish remover. Bleach will also take it off.

What removes nail polish from carpet?

So last night i was painting my nails and i got some nail polish on my carpet and i cant get it out. Please help.

Answer
You can usually remove spilled nail polish with scissors, but you have to wait until the polish is completely dry. Then snip the polish off with sharp scissors.

Just cut the very tips of the fibers. Work slowly. Don't cut a single millimeter more than you have to and pull up while cutting. This will help prevent divots in the carpet. Try your best to do just one or two fibers at a time...not a whole clump. "Dissect" any clumps first by cutting them in half or thirds.

This will work unless you have already used nail polish remover and have worked the nail polish into the carpet.

Also...cutting the nail polish works on shag or plush carpet, but not Berber or loopy carpet.

Good luck.

How do you remove nail polish from the carpet?

Q. My mom spilled nail polish on the carpet and can't get it out. Any suggestions?

Answer
I am sorry to break the news to you but you might have to get a Professional carpet cleaner. Also if it's a white carpet the nail polish remover. (It takes all the colour out of everything so only white carpet.) Hope it helps.

Does grey nail polish look good on dark skin?

Keke

I have medium-dark skin (like my avatar), would grey nail polish look good on me?
Also, what brands would you recommend? Thanks.

Answer
Hello!!

Grey nail polish might not be a good color choice for you skin tone, but you could always get black nail polish and add silver sparkles on top of it! I would look really awesome.

I think you should also try purples, navy blues, dark reds, and dark greens. They would look best on you! And if you like any other colors, feel free to buy it and try it on your nails!! It might look better than you would expect it to look!(:

Nail polish brands I recommend:
- OPI (around $8 per nail polish)
http://www.opi.com/

- Essie (around $8 per nail polish)
http://www.essie.com/

- Sinful Colors Proffesional (around $1.99 for one bottle)
http://www.sinfulcolors.com/

- Sally Hansen (around $2.99 per bottle)
http://www.sallyhansen.com/

These are all the brands I own and I'm really pleased with the results. They are easy to apply... You can buy them in Target stores, or at any drugstore!!

I hope you got the results you wanted. I spend a long time to come up with an answer that you would be pleased with.
